Stars def Penguins 3-2 (Crosby, Kunitz)

First Pens game I managed to watch. Disappointing loss. Surrendered another lead, this time 2-0. They started out so well with the PP looking amazing & then they ran out of steam & were outworked in the third period by the Stars. Malkin with his 4th penalty in 3 games & a really lazy penalty by Crosby with seconds left which led to the Stars scoring the winning goal with 2.9 secs remaining.

However, everything was overshadowed by this freak accident to Pascal Dupuis, who was hit on the back of the neck by a slapshot from Letang after being crosschecked in the back:

This was also a huge factor into the Pens losing momentum. Duper reported he has numbness in his arm, but said the feeling was coming back. He skated a little yesterday & took part in full practice today & looks like he'll be in the lineup vs the Isles tonight. He's very fortunate.

They will have to perform better against the Isles (the only unbeaten team in the NHL).

Penguins snapped the streak of the last undefeated team in the league with a 3-1 win over the Isles. Goals by Geno & Hornqvist (2). Brilliant game, had a real playoff vibe to it. Geno was unreal offensively & defensively and he managed his first penalty free game. Hornqvist is increasingly looking like a brilliant acquisition after each game.

Next game is on Wednesday...vs the Flyers.

Geno's Instagram is of course the gift that keeps on giving He gave an insight into the Pens Halloween party

Geno's friend & Pens skating coach Max Ivanov as the disco king, Letang as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, Sid as Rocky Balboa (Philadelphia's great icon ) and Geno as Dracula

Two really disappointing back to back losses against the Flyers at home & Detroit away.

All season they have been blowing leads but also being outworked in the third period. This team has a lot of work to do.

They play Nashville tonight & the first time against Neal since the trade. Neal scored a hat-trick for Nashville on the same night as the Pens blew a 2 goal lead in the last 2 1/2 minutes vs Detroit.

Flyers def Pens 5-3 (Spaling, Martin, Goc)
Detroit def Pens 4-3 OT (Dupuis, Maatta, Kunitz)

2014 is a year to forget for the Pens in terms of injuries. A blood clot, a stroke & now likely cancer (85% likelihood) for Olli Maatta.

Penguins’ Maatta To Undergo Surgery For Tumor of The Thyroid Gland; Full Recovery Expected
Monday, 10.27.2014 / 12:00 PM

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta is scheduled to undergo surgery next week to remove a tumor from his neck that could be a low-grade thyroid cancer.

“Olli will have surgery to remove the tumor,” said Dr. Dharmesh Vyas, the Penguins’ team physician. “Even if it is found to be cancerous, we do not expect that he will need radiation or chemotherapy, and we anticipate a complete recovery. In all likelihood, Olli will go on to live a healthy life and this should not affect his ability to play hockey long-term.”

Maatta, 20, has been cleared to play until the time of the surgery.

Vyas said he will likely be able to return to the lineup within four weeks.

“Obviously our first concern is for Olli and his health,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said. “He is an outstanding young man and has a tremendous future ahead of him. The doctors tell us that this is a very treatable condition, and that it can be taken care of with the surgery. The Penguins organization will be there for him and support him every step of the way.”

Vyas said the tumor was discovered during pre-season physicals by UPMC physician Dr. Eric Anish. Doctors ran multiple tests before reaching their diagnosis.

Maatta has one goal and four assists for five points in seven games this season, including two points in the past two games. He is averaging 20:12 of ice time.
Amazing that he's been dealing with this for weeks, and has been one of the best players for the Pens this season. Nothing seems to phase this kid. Luckily they have caught it early & the prognosis is excellent.

Bizarre ending to the game with the shootout being restarted after the 'winning shootout goal' from NYR's Dan Boyle turned out to be a double hit Never ever seen that before!

Good news is that Maatta returned last night just 2 weeks after his operation to remove a cancerous thyroid tumour...then immediately bad news as it was announced today that Dupuis has a blood clot in his lung & will likely miss the remainder of the season. Devastated for him. His run of bad luck after many injury free years is incomprehensible. Malkin, Letang, Fleury, Kunitz & Crosby were all at the press conference to support Duper.

Best wishes to him & his family.

The Pens scraped into the playoffs in the final wildcard spot (16th out of 16) after a dreadful slide over the final weeks of the season. They play the Rangers in the first game tonight. The Rangers finished first in the league. There are zero expectations of the Penguins, so it will be interesting to see how they do as the underdogs instead of one of the favourites as usual.

I don't hold much hope for them. I hope they won't get swept. But it's the playoffs & anything can happen.

Game 3
NYR def Penguins 2-1 (Hornqvist)
Game 4
NYR def Penguins 2-1 (OT) (Hornqvist)

NYR lead 3-1

Pens need to win tonight or they're done. Can't see it happening. All of the games have been decided by a single goal. I have to say the Rangers are not impressive at all.

The loss of Letang, Ehrhoff, Maatta & Pouliot has really killed the team. They have no offensive defensemen. The D they have is horribly slow & unable to move the puck. I can't even comment on Scuderi. Just awful. I pray that his contract will be bought out in the summer. The Despres for Lovejoy trade was terrible on all levels. I still can't believe it.

If they are going out tonight, I feel most sorry for Fleury. Arguably, his best ever season will be completely wasted.
