I've just never understood how some viewers can act like Octavia is a saint and that Bellamy was the worst brother ever to her. Like . . . what show did they watch? He wasn't always perfect, but he never put her in a fighting pit and decided to preside over her potential death.

It’s all about perspective, probably. People are biased towards their favourites, I’m sure the same is true for us, as much as we don’t want to admit it sometimes.

Agree. Often people in fandom pick a side and than stick to it regardless of the circumstances.
Tbh, to me they are both pretty flawed and that is what made them interesting. |

True, true. There were certain seasons where I actually liked Octavia (pretty much the even-numbered seasons), but I just couldn't believe the way some people celebrated her treatment of Bellamy. It was often so cruel. And Bellamy made mistakes in that relationship, too, but . . . Idk. To me, it just wasn't comparable.

There is a certain level of double standards when it comes to acceptable behaviour for male and female characters (and therefore bias), but unfortunately that's human nature.

There's a lot of double standards when it comes to characters AND ships involving them.

I guess I don't fault her much because season 5 is the first season where I felt first signs of bad character development and OOC behaviour. |

Ahh, I would agree to that. Paula would love this discussion BTW.

Idk, I kind of feel like season 5 was... it wasn’t OOC to me. It was just a really cruel exploration of her character. Which is fine and can be very interesting. I just was surprised that so many viewers were cheering her on and saying, “She’s so badass!” It wasn’t badass. It was tragic. But I did like the redemption arc season 6 had for her.
I used to be one of those people, back when season 3 was airing, that said I could understand why Octavia beat Bellamy up. But once I really reflected on my own gender double standards and biases there, I realized how problematic it was for me to think that, and I’ve since changed my opinion to thinking there is no excuse for her actions there. I always say, imagine if the roles were reversed and Bellamy had beat up Octavia in season 3, or if he had put her in the fighting pit in season 5. He would have been (deservedly) raked through the coals. But... gender double standards, I suppose. |
