If this really happens I don't think the fandom will react as harshly as last year since most of them are done with the show anyways and don't take it any serious what's happening in it any more?

Okay so I haven't watched the episode yet but followed the live tweets - the chip was destroyed BUT it was a fake one, that Octavia swapped out. So the real chip is safe, thanks to Octavia.
