The Once And Future Flash [3.19] - Episode Discussion [April 25th, 2017]

[3.19] THE ONCE AND FUTURE FLASH
ϟ EPISODE DISCUSSION ϟ

ϟ TOM CAVANAGH DIRECTS; BARRY TRAVELS TO THE FUTURE TO SAVE IRIS ϟ
Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar’s still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton). Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar. It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues.
Tom Cavanagh directed the episode written by Carina Adly MacKenzie (#319).

Well, if anything is clear, it's that Iris is the heart and soul of Team Flash. She definitely keeps them grounded.

I think the eppy could have been better written but I didn't hate it.

I found it weird that Barry didn't have a reaction to seeing Iris' headstone, or that he didn't hug her as soon as he got back from the future.

Grant was pretty good in the different roles. I loved Cisco as usual.

All in all, Iris West is very important and it was made clear for those who doubt it.

^ She's important but the show still made it clear that they can go on without her. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but when compared to Cisco's loss of Team Flash Iris' death ended up being a minor thing. I get that Cisco missed his friends but he's a young, brilliant scientist. Why did the show act like he can't find hope again unless he puts the team back together? If one finds Barry's inability to move on unhealthy then the same should be said about Cisco clinging to the myth of Team Flash. He almost forced 2017 Barry to stay there with him!

Great that they put the team back together but what about Caitlin? Wally? I guess I should have felt joyful when Barry convinced Julian, HR and Joe to go back work with STAR Labs but I was just annoyed. The future version of the team has no women and Wally's state was an afterthought. Once Joe got Barry back all hope was restored I hate that the Barry/Joe scene had to take precedence to a Barry/Iris moment when Iris is the one dying in a few months.

I can't anymore with Barry's stupidity. He can't even beat two minor villains by himself. He made his grand speech at the end only for Top to to kick his ass. His future version is no better. Savitar acts like Barry trapped him but he should really "thank" this Tracy person. Barry should be a freaking genius but this show likes to portray him as completely helpless. I'm running out of patience here!

All in all, very frustrating episode.

Yeah there were a lot of things that really frustrated me and overall I felt like the eppy was filler. Yes they could go on without her, but without present Barry there who hasn't lost Iris yet, the future team had no reason to do so.

They definitely write it as if they're all really dependent on each other, when in reality if they were strong individually, it'd open up so many more story possibilities.

On a positive note, this eppy was hailed as one that revolved around the importance of Iris and ratings were good!

I despise team flash. Sadly I don't see the team concept going away anytime soon.

They replicated the team formula on all their shows because they are too lazy to write consistent character arcs. These writers have no imagination.

Haters want to blame Iris and the romance for the decline in the ratings but I don't get how you can expect the general audience to stick around when the storytelling is so repetitive. If what happens in S3 has somewhat already happened in S1/S2 why should people watch this season as well? Savitar is too similar to Zoom. There are no stakes with Killer Frost because that is not Caitlin, it's her evil alternate persona.

I thought they were going somewhere with Iris and Barry/Wally after 3x10 but I was clearly mistaken. After a couple centered episodes Iris has been reduced to a pep talk giver that is unrealistically accepting of her death while Barry is in denial. Three season in and the main character still needs the team for everything, a team that consists of underdeveloped characters with no inner life. All this supposed Barry's greatness is in the future, a distant future that we won't get to see.

The fact is that the show is not even fun. I liked the musical and of course that was set in a AU. Personally, at this point I wouldn't be watching the show if it weren't for the romance

Now you know that the ratings were good because 3x18 ended with a Killer Frost cliffhanger

I forgot. They're the ones with the demo grab!

S4 really needs a formula shift.

I really miss the lightness of The Flash. This season was really dark and dreary.

Such a depressing episode. Wish there would have been more Iris in it. I feel like that's what CK wanted when she first wrote the episode but they rewrote it so much.
