This reminds me of my cousins.

There are 3 of them. 1 is a girl, who was doted on when she was born. 2 arrives and 1 resesnts her brother for taking up the parents' time. 3 arrives and 1 and 2 both adore him while still taking issue with each other (1 and 3 are five years apart).

Eventually, 3 finds out that he likes taking advantage of this. The most memorable trick 3 plays is at our house when he's about eight. 1 is in the bathroom, 2 is upstairs, 3 is in the basement with me and my sister. When 1 comes back downstairs, 3 says "hey 1, 2 took something of yours and put it in his bag." So 1 goes to investigate. 3 runs upstairs "hey 2, 1 is going through your stuff!" so 2 goes down all angry. Eventually their dad comes downstairs to scream at both of them for fighting and 3 is literally leaning back on the sofa with his hands folded behind his head and a smirk on his face.

That read a little bit like The Cat in the Hat - with Thing 1, Thing 2 and a new Thing 3! My youngest cousin is about 5 years younger than any of the rest of us and he used to do the same sort of stuff.
