4.12 - "A Christmas Car-roll" MIDSEASON FINALE 12-19-17

Oops we never had this thread put up. I can't put in all the promos and sneak peeks on my phone but at least we can discuss now!

I thought it was a fantastic episode! I have a few reservations, which I'll come to, but the dream scenes were all brilliant. I loved the way they managed to weave in all the echoes of previous episodes, I wonder if I'll notice even more subtle nods on a second viewing that I might have missed?

I loved Ray as Walter's guide and I really loved that we got to see the formation of Quintis all over again (and it was so cute!) It was fun to see the team problem solving in a weird world where the laws of physics didn't apply. It was a pity that Ralph wasn't in the dream very much, he could have maybe had the multiple roles that Patty had (although she was fun!) Sly had all the best lines and kudos to Ari for making the character so different to the Sylvester we know and yet so familiar at the same time.

But... I don't quite understand why Walter was so grumpy at the start. You'd think after the elation of Cabe's acquittal and getting the bail money back that the whole team would be in a better mood? There didn't seem to be any good reason why he couldn't take one day off - Paige had booked a cabin so they can't be totally broke at the moment. I also thought it was odd that Paige wasn't more angry with him. The others made their feelings quite clear and virtually stormed out of the garage, but Paige seemed only mildly disappointed. Special mention for "Reciprocated" though. It was so Walter!

And then there was Flo. OK, so it was lucky that she happened to call round and was able to call 911, but she didn't save his life, Toby (and Happy and Sly) did! The end of the ep was as odd as the beginning. I understand that Walter might be confused that he dreamt about being married to Florence and not Paige, but that doesn't mean he would suddenly be attracted to her? Toby's speech about his subconscious showing him how much he needs the team was just perfect, but his point was that the dream showed him how bad his life could be if things were different and he didn't have Scorpion, not how much better things could be if he married Flo? That shared look at the end was weird. He had just woken up from a coma, though, so I'll allow him to be a little muddled, but next ep he needs to get over it!

I really, really loved this episode. I laughed so much and "awww'd" so much. My favorite parts about Walter's dream:
  • how excited he was about Happy and Toby’s relationship in real life. he believes in love now and it’s clear he knows how special quintis is or he wouldn’t have been to excited to tell dream!happy about how he introduced the two of them.
  • the raw emotion in his voice when he greeted Ralph at the restaurant.
  • how somehow he probably knew Ray was nearby in real life? maybe he heard him walking around outside/recognized his footsteps or something?
  • how even in a world where everything is different he still connects with Paige via understanding Ralph because no matter the universe that is the start of their bond and it’s so important.
  • how he imagined people on the team as more successful versions of themselves in a world where they all never met because he thinks so highly of them (and so low of himself which makes me sad) but his subconscious totally downgraded Richard Elia to “tech dude” because his opinion of the guy has pretty much tanked after sci hard

Other lines: "oh crap, it's still happening" when he opened his eyes and saw Ray. Also how both Happy and Toby wanted advice from Walter on how to make their first Christmas gifts as a married couple special. I also loved when dream!Cabe was like "he likes to shout things he isn't."

Also I loved how Patty kept on showing up everywhere. Nikki is just such a fun addition to the cast.

The Richard Elia scene was hilarious!

And yes, the moment when Walter 'met' Ralph in the diner hit the perfect emotional spot.

I also loved Happy's "I'm being blunt. It's part of my charm," - that made me laugh.

I loved the episode Walter's dream was crazy but he still was able to connect with every team member and get them to help. I wish I could have seen more of Paige's reaction to Walter's accident her in the garage was great but I just wanted more. The whole Flo dream wife situation is just a whole lot of nothing in my opinion just a ploy writers use to rile up the fan base my guess it will be resolved in the next episode and turn out to mean nothing

A strange episode! The dream sequence was interesting but a little puzzling. Ray happened to be around outside and Flo from next door so even though in reality, Walter didn't know they were there, they both still popped into the dream. I have my reservations about Flo. I don't mind seeing Ray and enjoyed seeing Patty popping up everywhere.

As for Flo being around as Walter's wife, I guess if Scorpion doesn't exist and he hasn't met Paige, then the only other non-Scorpion candidate is her. Or that's the way I try to rationalise it because an old girlfriend could have played that part in the dream. So why Flo? Just to freak out the viewers. It was so strange to watch those scenes.

I really hope they are not trying to make something here, that look at the end did not fill me with confidence - not interested in a Walter/Paige/Flo triangle. Sylvester is single, she can look there if she wants!

Seeing Happy and Toby meeting for the first time and their reactions to each other brought a smile to my face. Likewise with Walter meeting Paige and Ralph again.

I liked the way each member was needed to bring together the rescue. In the dream accident, Flo was not there and not needed but team Scorpion was. So at least that part was spot on!

I love the idea that, no matter what the situation, Toby and Happy are Quintis. Seeing them in the first glow of attraction was marvelous. Kudos to both Kat and Ari for making their characters so different, yet still very much Paige and Sylvester.

I wasn't at all surprised that Walter would incorporate Flo and Ray in his dream. He may have simply heard their voices, even in his unconscious state. Nor am I concerned about the Flo/Walter dream marriage. The objective of the dream was to show Walter how much he needs the others. His life in the dream is very different - and apparently sort of boring. Instead of saving the world, he and Flo are professors. Not to diminish the importance of educators - but compared with the adventures Walter is used to, ho hum. It's not surprising that he would be disturbed to think that he dreamed of being married to anyone other than Paige. But I think Walter will work this out and see the dream - including the marriage - for what it is - and opportunity to appreciate the importance of Paige and everyone else.

And very disappointing.

When Walter wakes up within his dream, realizes he has a ring on his finger and is married, and then approaches the kitchen and sees a woman behind the refrigerator, he assumes it is Paige.

His reaction was one of disappointment. And this came before realizing this was a dream and that he had a real-world nightmare going on. Walter’s It’s a Wonderful Life dream was also a nightmare. It required him to re-meet Team Scorpion. He re-meets them in the order as experienced by real-world Walter. First is Cabe, and then comes Happy, Sylvester, Toby, Ralph, and Paige.

I think the end was Walter being puzzled and realizing he needed to figure out why Florence appeared in his dream as his wife. Well, it was a different life. So, perhaps what it will be is him realizing there is more to Florence than what he assumed. This could be attraction. And that would go down as more delay, delay, delay Waige. But, I don’t think that is what it will add up to. (I’m hoping it is not. The ratings have taken a 30-percent drop from where they were a year ago—much thanks tot he surprise Top 10 hit that is ABC freshman The Good Doctor.) It’s more like Walter realizing the dream Florence was an image of a woman to whom may have married if it weren't for the actual life of real-world Walter. It was dissatisfying to Walter. (It would be dissatisfying to Florence.) It is not a match. But, depending on how much longer will actress Tina Majorino be on Scorpion, if there is a future to having story for Florence, it could turn out the nurturing nature revealed for the dream Florence is one that is also surprisingly applicable to real-world Florence and suitable for a man who is right for her. (And she being right for that man.) This has many viewers wondering if that man is Sly. Could it be time for Sylvester?

Interesting catch that the order that people appear in Walter's dream is the order he met them in real life. I don't think we've gotten any concrete list of that order on the show - and there is certainly a lot of discussion in the fandom. But we absolutely know that Cabe was first.

I do think the dream is a puzzle that Walter needs to ponder and solve. He's had enough experience with hallucinations and dreams recently that he's not likely to completely dismiss it. But as you note, initially, he assumes he's married to Paige. In his dream, pretty much everything was wrong. Happy all dressed up and hosting a blog? Wrong. Sylvester as a shallow, arrogant businessman? Wrong. Cabe, Toby and Paige were equally wrong until Walter came into their lives in the dream. Hopefully, Walter's analysis will make him realize that the dream marriage to Flo is just as wrong and his initial thought - marriage to Paige - is the most logical progression for him.

I do expect it will take time for Walter to digest all this - so delayed Waige is likely inevitable.

I think the order established on the show would be Cabe, Toby, Sly, Happy, Paige, and Ralph.
  • In Postcards from the Edge, Walter and Toby talk about a trip they took together to Vegas in 2007. So Toby’s known Walter since at least 2007.
  • In Revenge, Toby says he’s known Sly since he was 16. If Sly turned 25 this year, then he presumably joined the team around 2008.
  • In Civil War, Walter says he’s known Happy seven years, so she joined the team around 2009.

I always thought Walter met Happy first. But I guess this proves that theory wrong.

Every show makes occasional continuity mistakes.
