When he calls Carrie a child, I just really really want to say to him, "that's rich."

The book did a good job of describing his lack of maturity due to skipping grades and having no friends. The movie made him more popular.

let the audience know so those without imagination can be satisfied.

I wonder if she intended to let it be known in the text what he asked (and that's why she came up with something) and then decided against including if OR if she never intended the audience to know.
