I think that kind of character can be cartoonishly bad: just being the bad guy who sleeps with his friend's girl, and then is the wimpish coward who sells his friends down the river. He was all that, but also I felt like it was a reasonable response to the situation. It could easily have been corny. And the fact he didn't care about the girl in the end I understood, as I don't think he ever really cared for her. He slept with her because he could.
