Got another jam at 2pm today at a recording studio across the city! Going to develop the structure of 3 new songs and of course record them.

They are just live jams at the moment. Once they are set up with structure and all that then we will record the bass and guitar to a metronome then add the drums abd vocals. The proper way to get studio recordings done!

i prefer jam sessions to formed songs. It's more raw and pure.

so....music is 90% of the time this unrefined, raw mess of sound. Through those clattering of notes, pure songs come. Without the noise, those beautiful songs don't exist.

Yesterday I had a jam at home with my brother before I take my drum kit back to work. He is finally 'getting' the fact that if you know a song in your mind and you know the sounds each cymbal/skin makes then you can play the song! He would always need to hear the song he is playing on a speaker to play along to it which pissed me off so much as it is stupid doing that! Especially when I know he is WAY above that entry level for drumming.

I am trying to force him to get it into his damn head that it is better without it - then at some points he was getting it as we were in sync and predicted each other - like you do in a jam! Then when I said I start with the bass doing this (then I do a simple doodle of the intro) then I say you on the last 2 repeated bits start the kick drum then he said 'then we both kick in' I said yeah! Then I pointed out this is EXACTLY how in a jam you start structuring original songs!!! By ear, and feeling then playing with structure - but do it in your mind and with intuition, not listening to a song or watching the songsterr app on your phone...

You should like this song Matt. It is one of the best melodic ballads from Load/reload era of Metallica. Highly underrated those albums! They are now 20 years old so can be considered "classic" now!

I bought that CD new a week before release! This was pre-internet so no way to show anyone apart from in a car (which I did not have) or at other people's houses who liked Metallica (which I knew no one at the time as I had just moved to the city from a small country town) but I frequented an arcade in the CBD! I took the CD there, the guy behind the counter liked the band and was stoked I had the CD a week early so played my CD on the intercom for the entire arcade to enjoy! Best I could do at the time! These days all someone would do is rip it and upload onto the internet as a torrent or some other illegal means. No fun and not fair! It was so god to see the look on people's faces hearing the new songs right there...

Technically it was, but not as abundant as the last 15 years or so though. Especially out in the sticks of a crappy country town of less than 2000 people which only had A.M radio stations to tune into and no cable tv/satellite tv but just 2 free to air tv channels!
