if it would've been done the way it was in the book, it would've made sense. But no, they just rushed through it. I knew it was gonna be bad when I figured out the entire storyline was crammed into one episode

It weren't that rushed and it was all in the book, well besides him beating the dead body

There was no buildup here. Claire has been visiting Alex several times in the book, and Jack gave her information a good number of times for it too. Plus, they completely changed the way they meet again.

I haven't read book 2 yet so all of this is confusing me. I think the big problem here is the fact that we were down sized to 13 episodes instead of 16.

I think they just tried to cut the boring stuff out. She didn't visit him that often in the book and to be fair, the television show I swear she went to him 3 to 4 times in one episode. She should have just went once. it would have made more sense. These books are incredibly boring, infant 70% of her readership hate her writing after book one because of her needless description of pointless things. The television show has corrected Diana's mistake and made it much better.

I don't mind the boring cut out, but if explanations on characters' motivation is missing, that is a problem and makes people go:

Yeah but in doing so I feel like we don't get the whole plot ie Claire telling Randall his death date.

Yeah I figured. Another issue on have is they could avoid this if the would just slow down the timeline, season 1/2 should have been book 1 and season 3/4 should have been DIA. They are putting a whole book or trying to put a whole book which is about 600+ pages into 13 episodes and it just isn't working.
