Because the ones that came up with had a different number system then we use

Exactly ! They used the system duodecimal (counting by dozen, so the "base" numbers were 12, 60, 120) while we use the decimal system (counting by ten).

And why did they count by 12 ? Because sailors and merchants used to count on their fingers joints and not on their fingers.

Then you're gonna say me, we have 15 fingers joints not 12! Yes, but they were using their thumbs to mark the number, so

They would put their thumb on the number they just counted

And that's why we have 12 months, 24 hours, 60 minutes etc...
