I bet he really didn't... And I'm wondering if he might have made a different decision had he known all of it beforehand.

Especially since he never got Tom out of her life. That to me was a failure on his part. Not doing what he planned. And it was something the writers were wrong about. They should have killed Tom like they planned

Yes, getting Tom into her life was his biggest mistake... He didn't pay attention, he didn't think that Berlin would get his fingers on him and turn him around.
Oh yes, killing Tom after the first season I think would have changed the whole storyline so much. __________________

It would have changed the entire show if they would have killed Tom after the first season,

Oh yes, we know that... What reason could Liz have had for hating Red and siding with her mom if it wasn't Tom's (her love of life) death? This way she would have gotten him killed somehow and Liz could have never blamed him for that.

If red had killed him in S1, liz might have understood when she learned that Tom was lying about his identity.
I know the writers planned to kill him. I Wonder if they also planned for Red to have hired him to watch liz or of that idea came later. __________________

Good question, Marilyn... Not sure how they would have revealed that part if he was dead. Maybe they had completely different plans back then and honestly, I'd like to know. It's intriguing.
Miranda, you think so? I'm not sure if in season 1 she was so far gone already that something would have gotten her to the point to hate him that much. __________________

I believe her hatred started way later as well. It definitly wasn't there in S1.
