I think Red generally knows that Ressler is ALWAYS looking out for Liz's best interests. Even when it doesn't turn out right, Ressler is here for protecting Liz the best way he can.

And I agree, Ressler is and will always be looking out for her.

I think are would definitely prefer Ressler over Tom.
He's made his feelings on Tom clear.
