I honestly didn't mind Alex and Mer this season ... in the end, she needed him a lot more than he needed her during this time period. Sometimes friendships are like that.

She needed him... true Alex had nothing this season that needed Meredith for it, she was there for him plenty of times in the past and didn't need/take anything in return.

THIS. Also, to add to that, I would've rather seen Alex get a big surgery this year rather than Amelia. I mean, my main wish is that Meredith gets an amazing surgical storyline, but if it can't be her then I'd rather have Alex who is at least an original cast member.
