It's why, my whole academic life, when an assignment called for a certain amount of words or more, my story would be right at the exact amount necessary . Maybe I'm not very imaginative?

I suggest just pouring it all out the way it is in your head. Let it be a mess at first. Then go back and edit, edit, edit. You'd be surprised how you can turn chaos into something great.
