Well, maybe usurp was the wrong word. It may have always been Mary's power, but James was certainly exercising it when she was in France. He's still powerful at court as her chief advisor, but it's not the same. Now he has to bow to his sister's authority and do things he doesn't want to do - like seduce Emily Knox. Now Darnley is threatening to take away the power he has left.

True. He probably feels so powerless. He's most likely one hundred percent RIGHT not to trust Darnley, but he can't really do anything to make Mary listen to him or stop the marriage. It has to be frustrating.

When James visited French Court in Season 1, we never saw him meet Catherine or Henry, right? If James and Catherine could meet now, I'm sure they would have plenty to talk about. They both just want to protect Mary.

I don't know if they met or not, but they didn't have any scenes together. I would assume though that they did at least meet. I mean Catherine and Henry don't strike me as the type to have guests (even if they aren't there to see them) and not at least greet them.

I'm not quite sure about him either, but I'm definitely rooting for him to be a good man in the end. But for now... his motivations are not always clear, and that's what makes him interesting. Plus, he's hot.
