It was a highlight for sure. It started so promising.

Best thing about this episode was Dany being in Winterfell but I hated how cold everyone greeted her. Back then I thought that was normal and they would accept her once they realized she was there to help them but nope, their stupid northern attitude never changed

This episode has several things in common with the very first episode of season 1. It's a nice enough start of the season, but in a season consisting of only six episodes I guess I'd hoped for more punch from the get-go.

Jonerys riding on the dragons were the last cute moment between them

As a shipper this scene was of course incredible. But apart from that the episode was a rather cold start into the last season

Besides of their scene I thought that the last 30% of this episode was truly awesome, with scenes that actually had some weight. The best was Sam being told by Dany how she murdered his family. John Bradley was so good in this scene with his facial expressions alone (without much dialogue). Jon finding out he was a Targaryen was pretty great as well (as it was the only scene were Kit Harington actually had any character work to do). Also, Jaime returning to Winterfell with Bran waiting was a nice ending.

those were the good moments yes. it's not like the episodes all were crap. the utter storyline was crap, yes, but the show still had its good moments.

What made earlier seasons of GOT so good were the unexpected turns of events characters would encounter and the effects they had on their destinies and personalities. The writers of the final season had the problem that virtually all of the remaining characters are now in the same place at the same time rather than roaming here there and everywhere with new problems and surprises possible at every turn.

Instead of confronting the need to keep interest at a high level by the use of imaginative story points the writers took whatever proposed plot lines GRRM had given to them and opened the season with two episodes of talking heads discussing upcoming battles and who should sit on The Iron Throne. This approach saved time, effort and money but made a mockery of what had been the finest dramatic presentation in any medium ever.

Other problems would inflict later season 8 episodes. Thus Martin abandoned GOT twice and the writers , by not even trying to maintain the sky high standards of earlier years, have joined him in his infamy.

I agree with you guys. I missed the real character interactions. The dialogues, which made GOT so strong.

And every time I see Bran, I just want to throw him out of the window myself.

so true! i mean 8x01 might have been great if the entire rest of the season was not such trash. seems so slow paced considering Dany snapped and was killed in about an hour span.
