He divorced Amatis, because Luke was a werwolf, and fell out of favor with Valentine. (Although Amatis "betrayed" the Shadowhunter, is a part of Sebastians Army. Talk about ironic.)

well everyone that falls for a herondale either them or the herondale himself has to go through some kind of tragedy before they can be happy but stephen never gets his happiness truly
