Chandler Riggs: I was hoping it would happen, because it's such a defining thing for Carl's character. It really changes him a lot. So I was hoping they wouldn't just shoot someone else's eye out and that's how they get killed off. That would just be annoying, so I'm very glad that they carried out with it.

IGN: At what point did they let you know that they were going to go this route, and what was your reaction?

Riggs: Well, actually, last year, I was out in LA for Talking Dead, for episode 15, and Scott Gimple wanted to sit down and kind of brief me on the seasons, and he told me about the eye and everything. I was so excited, because I didn't know if it was going to happen, so I was really, really excited for it to happen.

IGN: Have you had a chance to see what that scene looks like with the finished VFX? Because it looks awesome.

Riggs: Yeah, yeah. I've literally watched the episode four different times, just with different family members. Yeah, I just love it -- not just because of that thing with Carl, but the entire episode in general is just so good. It's my favorite episode, by far. It's like a movie.

IGN: What was your reaction just as a viewer watching it when you did get to that part?

Riggs: Well, I hadn't seen the full visual effects until I saw the episode, so when I saw it, I was very excited. When we actually shot it, we were originally going to put on a prosthetic, but we just decided -- because there wasn't enough time for it, we just put a little blood around my eye and just did it completely with digital effects. And it looks great. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

We try to make stuff as practical as possible, make it more realistic. Like when I was being carried into the infirmary, that was actually a real prosthetic. So yeah, we try to make things as practical as possible. But I think actually episode 1 of this season was the biggest, like with the most special effects they had to use for zombies at least [for the quarry sequence].

Having never read the comics , i had no idea this was coming . Good to see Carl get another big moment . From Taking Dead , Greg said they used a full size dummy, with chandlers full face mold . Rick / Andrew ,was carrying a dummy after Carl got shot . Even when michoone was stroking Carl head it was stil the dummy !
