I guess Frigga was more expendable than Odin. And neither of the boys were probably going to mourn Odin all that much as his death wouldn't have hit them that hard.

With the plot they wanted they needed it to be Frigga because Loki wouldn't have been interested in working with Thor and helping him for vengeance if it had been Odin that died.
I think Odin's death would've hit them both hard but it would've inspired different emotions so they wouldn't have been on the same page for their team up. It would've been a point of contention between them instead of a unifying thing. But I really wish they'd gone with a different plot or way to get Thor and Loki working together. There wasn't enough Frigga -too many of her scenes are in the deleted scenes in both films - and I wanted to see more of her relationship with her sons. __________________
