Rewatched, and I'm still unsure whether I saw her or not.

Is Maria the person approaching the glass screen while Steve and Natasha look on to the operating table?

Yep. She was wearing the same clothes in the one set pic we have of her.

She might be luckier with Age of Ultron. I liked her in the first TA movie, but I don't know Maria from the comics and that film only featured her for a bit, so I'm ok with whatever amount of screentime they'll give her.

I don't think her role will be very big either. She might take over as Director in TWS at the end (she's Director of SHIELD for awhile in the comics).

What happened to Fury? Did they fire him?

Fury went into hiding after the disaster of The Secret War (a 5-issue comic book series) and the leaders of several nations decided that she was not that loyal to Fury so she would be a better Director so they made her the interim director. They had a Nick Fury LMD walking around SHIELD though so people would think he was still around. Then she becomes Deputy Detective and then finally Director when they think Nick died.

So Maria's skeptical attitude toward Fury's decisions and modus operandi at the beginning of TA is pretty much taken from the comics?

I almost miss Maria being in the trailer as well. Looks like both Maria and Sharon don't get a lot of screentime in the movie

Yeah, she has some issues with the way Nick runs SHIELD.

I expect Sharon to be in the first 2 minutes of the movie and then every other flash of long blonde hair will keep me wondering if that's her.
