Five local comic book shops will participate in the national Free Comic Book Day this Saturday, May 3.
The same 60 comic book titles will be available at stores across the nation. Some of this year's biggest titles include Guardians of the Galaxy (now a summer blockbuster which will hit theaters on August 1), Hello Kitty, Rocket Raccon, Archie, The Tick and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. What a throwback, right?
Comic book store owners recommend arriving early to have your pick of all 60 titles.
On Free Comic Book Day, Larger Than Life Comics and Toys will give away free gift bags filled with posters, buttons and graphic novels to the first 25 customers in the door.
"There have been years where we have 50 to 60 people waiting in line before we open," said Thomas Yeldon, owner of Larger Than Life Toys and Comics in Great Northern Mall. "We run out very quickly. By 3 or 4 p.m., everything's gone."
Larger Than Life Toys and Comics will limit customers to two free comics per person. The first 25 customers in the door at Larger Than Life will also receive free gift bags filled with posters, buttons and graphic novels.
Holidays aside, Yeldon says Free Comic Book Day is easily the single busiest day of the year for his shop. They will open an hour early this Saturday, at 9 a.m.
Cloud City Comics and Toys in DeWitt will also open one hour early on Saturday, though people start lining up at 7 a.m., one employee said.
Free Comic Book Day is promoted by celebrities each year, like Hugh Jackman in 2013 and Stan Lee this year. LeVar Burton, host of "Reading Rainbow," will also tell you his love of the written word started with comic books.
