So true. He manages to play beautifully all the facets of the character - the cunning side, the wit, the deep anger and resentment, his conflicting feelings for Asgard and his brother, the vulnerability (especially in Thor). He can be both creepy and charming, at the same time.

That's why we love to hate him, or hate to love him.
He played a more clear-cut villain in the Avengers, but it's in his nature to always change his position and alliances, and dance between mischief and evil.
In Thor you see his jealousy, rancorous nature and all his other flaws, but also the heartbreak and confusion and feel torn.

miranstarr 07-01-2012 07:10 PM

Add me please!! I'll be back to fangirl over him in a bit. Have to make my rounds first! :lmao:

HULK IS GOING TO SAY THIS AND TRY TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR: LOKI IS THE REASON THE AVENGERS WORKS.

THINK ABOUT IT. HIS THREAT HAS TO BE CLEAR AND EXECUTED WITH REAL MENACE. HE MUST BE COMPELLING EVEN IF HE IS NOT LIKABLE. BUT THOSE ARE JUST THE CONCERNS TO MAKING HIS OWN MOTIVES WORK. WHAT ELSE DOES HE NEED TO DO? THINK ABOUT ALL THE SCENES LOKI HAS IN THIS MOVIE. WHY DOES JOSS HAVE HIM TALK TO BASICALLY EVERY CHARACTER? BECAUSE HE PROVIDES EACH ONE WITH INNER CONFLICT.

AND THAT MEANS THAT TRULY, LOKI HAS TO PSYCHOLOGICALLY BALANCE OFF SEVEN DIFFERENT CHARACTERS: HE HAS TO INDOCTRINATE CLINT. HE HAS TO CLASH WITH CAP’S EARNESTNESS. HE HAS TO ANTAGONIZE TONY AND ENGORGE HIS EGO. HE HAS TO SPURN THE ETHOS OF HIS BROTHER AND AVOID HIS OWN HUMANITY AT ALL COSTS (WHETHER IT BE FOR HIS OWN LUST OF POWER OR THE GRAVE CONSEQUENCES OF THE DEAL HE HAS MADE). HE HAS TO LET NICK FURY’S SEVERE THREATS BOUNCE OFF OF HIM. HE HAS TO TURN THINGS AROUND IN AN INCREDIBLE INTERROGATION SCENE WITH BLACK WIDOW. HE HAS TO ENRAGE BANNER. AND THEN HE HAS TO GO AHEAD ANDTAUNT THE HULK.(6)

THE POINT IS THAT LOKI HAS A HECK OF A LOT TO DO WITH ACCENTUATING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF OUR MAIN CAST. AND GIVEN WHAT HULK SAID EARLIER, FLESHING OUT THE CHARACTERS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THIS MOVIE (IN SERVICE OF THE CIRCLE PAN MOMENT). SO WITHOUT LOKI, AND EVERYTHING TOM HIDDLESTON BRINGS IN HIS GREAT PERFORMANCE, THE FILM ABSOLUTELY DOESN’T WORK.

HE’S NOT JUST THE LYNCHPIN. HE’S A SERIES OF LYNCHPINS.”

Never read that review/comment before.

I very much agree with how Loki's role in The Avengers is essential to bring out the characterizations and inner conflicts of all the heroes. He is a strategist and a manipulator - he knows exactly which buttons push with each and every character, and through that they could tap into the backstory, beliefs and flaws of them.

Natasha Romanoff 07-02-2012 12:53 AM

After all, he is a god of Mischief ;) There is no doubt that he is villain (I've seen a lot of people trying to say that he is not villain :look:), he is an amazing one. He is complex and three dimensional which makes Loki irresistible.

Hawthorn 07-02-2012 01:40 AM

Narrative wise, he is more of an antagonist in 'Thor', but he has definitely evolved into a villain by the time of 'The Avengers'. But like you said, he is pretty complex and multi-layered so there is more to him than the black-and-white baddie of the situation.

Natasha Romanoff 07-02-2012 02:09 AM

He is amazing in both movies. It's just you love that you hate him  and you can't wait to see what his next move is.

eireanne 07-02-2012 06:27 AM

This is random, but I can't help but giggle every time I see this. :lmao:

Hawthorn 07-02-2012 07:18 AM

LOL @ that picture. Gotta love Loki's "I'm judging your unrestrained lust" face.

When I opened the thread I was tempted to use this quote from one of Tom's Avengers interview for the title:
"What do you and Loki have in common?" - "We're both sexy."
He was joking, but... :D

Dynamite 07-02-2012 07:26 AM

Loved the bit where the hulk bashed him about :D

Hawthorn 07-02-2012 08:01 AM

According to many reviews that was the funniest bit of the movie. People in my showing completely cracked up at that bit, and at Hulk punching Thor out of the blue.

:P I don't! I think my favorite part is when he's in the Hulk's cage and talking to Natasha

Dynamite 07-02-2012 08:10 AM

Haha, do you actually like him as a character?

Hawthorn 07-02-2012 08:18 AM

I LOVE Loki, but he so deserved that beating.

That scene is fantastic. I think Tom mentioned how much he enjoyed that one-on-one with Black Widow, too. Great dialogue from both characters, and you can see how well-matched they are - both smart manipulators, always reading between the lines of what the person in front of them says.

I honestly do. He's a complex character in the movies, comics, and mythology itself. And I don't define him as a whole villian, I think he does whatever will get him more ahead in life and if that's fighting on the side of evil, he's going to do what it takes. I think he's so dark in The Avengers movie because he's been in exile and pretty much has fumed over what transpired between his family and him.
