That's what I was saying below. The type casting, or stunt casting, could work in their favour here because the audience will paint in a lot of Gus's character themselves, based on their relationship with Shatner's past roles. Most notably of course, James Kirk. Which allows the filmmakers to keep the focus on Jim & Aurora without having Gus feel like a plot device (which is what he is really).
