Robert Crawley

Robert Crawley, the 5th Earl of Grantham,[1] also known as Lord Grantham, is the patriarch of Downton Abbey, the son of the late 4th Earl of Grantham and Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, the brother of Lady Rosamund Painswick nee Crawley, the husband of Cora Crawley née Levinson, Countess of Grantham, the son-in-law of the late Isidore and Martha Levinson, the brother-in-law of the late Marmaduke Painswick, the father of Lady Mary Crawley, Lady Edith Crawley, and the late Lady Sybil Branson née Crawley, father-in-law of Tom Branson and the late Matthew Crawley, and he is the grandfather of Sybil Branson and George Crawley.
Hugh Bonneville

Hugh Richard Bonneville Williams (born 10 November 1963), known professionally as Hugh Bonneville, is an English stage, film, television and radio actor. He is most well known for starring in the ITV hit television series Downton Abbey (beginning in 2010) and the BBC London Olympics mockumentary comedy series Twenty Twelve. He also starred as Bernie in Notting Hill. From 2011 Bonneville is the narrator of the Channel 4 show The Hotel for all current 3 series. In 2013, he made a brief appearance as the Duke of Milan for the opening episode of Da Vinci's Demons.

Bonneville's first professional stage appearance was at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park. In 1987 he joined the National Theatre where he appeared in several plays, then the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1991, where he played Laertes to Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1992–1993). He was also Valentine in The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Bergetto in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, Kastril and later Surly in The Alchemist.

He made his television debut in 1991, billed as Richard Bonneville. His early roles were usually good-natured bumbling characters like Bernie in Notting Hill (1999) and Mr. Rushworth in Mansfield Park (1999). In the BBC television series, Take A Girl Like You (2000) and Armadillo (2001), he played more villainous characters, leading up to the domineering Henleigh Grandcourt in Daniel Deronda (2002) and the psychopathic killer James Lampton in The Commander (2003) series. In Love Again, he played the poet Philip Larkin.

In 2004, he played Sir Christopher Wren in the docudrama Wren – The Man Who Built Britain. In Iris (2001), he played the young John Bayley opposite Kate Winslet, with his performance lauded by critics and receiving a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

In early 2010, he earned a role in the comedy film Burke and Hare.[7] In 2011 and 2012 he starred as Ian Fletcher in the award-winning BBC comedy series Twenty Twelve. In December 2012 he appeared on BBC 2 with co-star Jessica Hynes in World's Most Dangerous Roads, travelling through Georgia. He is appearing in the 2012 series of the popular ITV period drama Downton Abbey, as Robert, Earl of Grantham. He is also slated to appear in the much-delayed Hippie Hippie Shake, alongside Cillian Murphy and Sienna Miller.

Ooh,
I saw "Notting Hill" yesterday (finally something worth watching on German TV) and though his part wasn't that big it was definitely worth watching the whole thing. Really lovely!

It has been years since I last saw Notting Hill. I definitely need to rewatch.

Thanks for that YT clip. Hugh looks young there!

Thanks for the picture Lindsay, didn't know he was involved with that, Paddington Bear takes me back a bit, used to love watching that on tv when I was little.

One of Robert's best moments in the series so far last night, I knew he'd have to vent his rage at Bunting sometime, so worth waiting for.

We haven't seen Robert blow a fuse for a while so that was entertaining to watch.

My Shakespeare on Sky Arts 1: Hugh Bonneville discusses A Midsummer Night's Dream and why the playwright's work gives as much lust and violence as any episode of Game of Thrones

Thanks Lindsay, read that in the magazine this week, he's right about Shakespeare for lust and violence.

Aside from Robert blowing a fuse, which we all enjoyed, I thought him comforting Edith was very touching, he's a contradiction, sometimes he can be a bit of an ass with Cora, and then there's his sensitive side as well, supporting Mrs Patmore being another example.

True. There are times he completely ignores Edith and then there are times we see his soft side with her as evidenced in the recent ep and in S3. Like I said, he's not father of the year but he loves his family like he loves Downton. He's still one of those 'conservative' types (like his mother) and frowns upon any major change but he's slowly getting there. I was surprised he sided with Mrs. Patmore instead of Carson (who he normally agrees with) regarding the memorial.

Yeah, that was a surprise, but given Mrs Patmore's argument, which was also touching and made a lot of sense, I was glad he took her side, and Edith needs all the help she can get right now.

Maybe there's hope for him yet Lindsay.

I reckon he will still be jealous of Bricker & Cora plus having that talk with Shrimpie about his marriage will probably make Robert think about his own marriage as well.

Absolutely, I think that talk with Shrimpie about his marriage troubles might be coming close to home for Robert soon, no doubt he'll be on red alert whenever Bricker is around Cora, and time for Robert to start appreciating her a little more, and realising what he stands to lose.

I think Shrimpy was specifically back because of this dilemma going on between Robert & Cora. I don't know how Robert will react to all of this (if it does blow over) but I'm sure he will be devastated.
