The whole thing is kind of silly in my opinion since people watch it in other methods like DVR, downloads, and On Demand, etc...They are getting better about that though. They are taking it a bit more seriously.

Yeah, the show was up against Sunday Night Football, with Baltimore and Pittsburgh playing against each other. That rivalry is HUGE and both the teams and fans dislike each other. Hate would probably be a better word. If the Nielson boxes are in families with males outnumbering females, football usually tends to win in what will be watched on the main tv. That always happens in the families I know who have the boxes.

They take a population sample that is representative of viewership in general (families, singles, single moms, adults, children, etc.). These people are elected for a certain period of time and then other households are chosen. The rotations are intercalated, not all of the households chosen rotate at the same time to avoid the data from jumping around.

There are people working with the households for months before to teach them how to use the boxes which contain a separate button for every member (so their gender, age and status is clear for the analysts) and there are people monitoring every single minute to check for irregularities (for example, if an 8 year old appears to be watching porn at 3 am they go investigate what's happening because probably a parent or an older sibiling is ashamed to be caught watching it and they are messing with the numbers).

ETA:
They are still behind when it comes to DVR's, downloads, etc., but the real big gain for a network is still advertising so the most important aspect continues to be getting the right demo to watch the show during the original airing time.

I agree, the final numbers can still go up a bit.

I think the current rating system is for the birds. It's not an accurate representation of numbers on EVERYONE who is watching anyway.

I find this to be really ridiculous. I don't have a Nelson box and I know so many others that don't so therefore our viewings aren't counted in the ratings. The current ratings system in my opinion is not representative of the true number of how many people watch a show. They really need to change it.

But the show is still doing well in the overall ratings and in the demos so that's very good. Especially for a Sunday hour, and with no lead in.
