You know, when I first saw "New Girl," it must have been several episodes in. Mainly, I wanted to see how it was because I was so impressed when Zoey Deschanel guest-starred on "Bones." I can't remember exactly now, but I think it was one where Nick and Schmidt were wicked mad at each other. (FYI, not the episode where someone moves back into the apartment and they're trying to trick each other re: their bedrooms.)
I thought the guy playing Nick was HILARIOUS! After that, I was rather disappointed in the show. Even though it's only a half-hour, I'd often watch it only halfway through. To be fair, I think most shows are stupid because the characters are annoying, either the way they talk, or because it seems the writers think that if the characters behave badly we'll just somehow find it funny. Kind of like how modern comedians aren't funny and don't make real jokes, they just swear a lot and everybody laughs because they swore, just a "wo-hoah!" Or the characters are really children in adult bodies, and it just grows old, especially when the actors are also much older than the characters they play. It's a gimmick. "New Girl" goes this way much of the time, but other times, the humor is very fresh and different. Since seeing the pilot (only a few weeks ago), which was PURE GENIUS, I can't stop thinking why this show has gone this way. Perhaps a constraint in the time format, or just not having awesome writers...who knows? Could be anything! All I know is, I laughed for the ENTIRE episode (1.5 hours?), and it's maybe the BEST pilot show I've ever seen. (Schmidt and his douchebag jar? When all the guys "gang up" on Jess in the restaurant to make her feel better? Loved it!) Since then, Injured is the first episode I have truly enjoyed the whole way through. I loved the entire bar scene, it was so funny! I sure do hope that this show gets renewed, and that it finds its footing. The occasional moments of comic genius (Nick dragging Jess away from Schmidt's bedroom door after her one-night stand doesn't turn out like she planned?), and the two great entire episodes I saw, hint that this show is not at the top of its game, not yet. Maybe having a 1-hour slot would help, too? *** And on a completely unrelated thought, when Nick was talking about his life to Jess (in the bar), I realized Nick is me! You know how you take those character quizzes, and they are completely silly because they tell you you are a character who is nothing like you? (Or at least not much?) Nick (to Jess): "I never do anything unless I know what's gonna happen." Holy cow, I can (sadly) relate to that! I do a search for the show's website and the first result I see has this excerpt: 'NICK (Jake Johnson, "No Strings Attached") is the most grounded. He had big plans for life, but somewhere along the way, he stopped caring and became a bartender. Usually the smartest guy in the room, he has an uncanny knack for reading people and uses humor to deflect everyone and everything. ' FYI, one reason It seems so odd that "Nick is me" is because I'm female. Though obviously the comparison is on personality/character, it still strikes me as funny that the TV character I most relate to is a disaffected male bartender! Huh! I'm female, I don't drink, and I could never picture myself as a lawyer. Last edited by NickButNot; 03-06-2012 at 10:55 PM |

@unlessadream: Thanks for the Bones reminder! Does this mean they are switching to Monday for the whole season? Or just for the opener?
