Sterling High

Warning - This is based on the idea for the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. This book was released about a week or so before the Virginia Tech shootings. It IS about a school shooting, and the aftermath there of. Yes, I know that this may be an upsetting topic for some and I understand that, it is a topic very close to my heart and I wanted to see what other people felt about it and for me that is through writing with others. If this upsets you please do NOT info. me on this thread, I would like this thread to be a positive place. You can, however, feel free to im me with any concerns

Sterling is one of those, perfect towns that everyone dreams about. People know each other, honk at one another as they pass in cars, help each other. All the kids in town go to one of three schools. Sterling Elementry, Sterling Middle, or Sterling High. This is a story about innocence, this is a story about Sterling High. This is a story about safety, comfortability, a story about how everything can change in the blink of an eye. Sterling was one of those perfect town until eight days ago just after noon. For roughly Nineteen minutes a shooting occurred at Sterling High. Ten were killed, including one teacher. Over twenty people were physically injuried. No one will ever be the same.

Peter Houston was the shooter, everyone knew him. He was the kid with the glasses. The kid everyone had picked on since day one. That's just how it worked. No one seemed to realize how it could impact everyone so strongly. Peter Houston was not one of the ten people killed. He did not take his own life. He is currently in jail awaiting trial.

Rules
1. The most important. This rp is to be treated at the same time like every other rp (enjoy yourself as much as possible) but also please treat it was respect as the subject matter deserves that.
2. Boy/Girl rule is enforced. Your character can be a student, a teacher, a parent, etc.

Name: Caitlin Weaver
Age: Seventeen
Brief history: Caitlin's mother and Peter's mother were best friend until some mysterious fight tore them apart. Caitlin and Peter were still friend in school until Middle school, which divided them when Caitlin became part of the 'in crowd' and started to hang out with them. A boy that Caitlin had been casually dating, named Will and one of her other friends, Ashley were both killed. Caitlin was with Will when he was shot and passed out, getting a bad cut to the head, she was in the hospital to be checked on until a few days ago.

Brief history: Gene is the brother of Sam Porter. He attended Sterling when he was in high school and never thought that something like this would happen there. He loves his sister dearly and wants to be by her side. He's taken leave for the rest of the semister and intends to finish his last half of school next year.

Name: Christa Nickerson
Age: Thirty-Five
Brief history: Christa was once a member of the young battered wives club. She fleed her husband and ended up in Sterling where she ended up as, who would have guessed, a police officer. She is a good cop but won't let her real name get in the papers, or her photo if possible. She is trying to get divorce papers to her husband on the other side of the country now. Christa was the officer who was first on the scene at the Sterling High Shootings. She was also the one to talk Peter Houston down. She feels personally invested in this and makes it her business to check on the wound and such.

Brief history: Jake is the prinicpal of Sterling High. He knows just about every one of his students so he took the killings very hard. He was not injuried, but he might as well of been. He was the one who was forced to identify each of the bodies at the 'crime scene'.

Age: Seventeen
Brief history: Sam never really knew Peter, as a friend or as a student. She just dismissed him as a classmate whom she saw walking the halls. Sam’s best friend Laura was killed in the shooting, she died instantly. Sam only got shot once in the shoulder as she was hovering over Laura’s body screaming. She is currently in the hospital and she is hoping to be discharged soon

Age: Thirty-Eight
Brief history: Amy was Peter’s English teacher in Ninth Grade and she hadn’t taught him since then. Although they always caught up to chat and he seemed lively when he spoke to her. He was her one of her favorite students. She never dreamed he would do something like that. He seemed like a good boy. Thankfully, she didn’t get injured in the shooting, but some of her students and colleagues did and it makes her sick to even think that her “favorite student” would do that.

Brief history: Jamie’s sons went to the school and he was shocked when he found out that Chris and Ben, his sons, were killed. He will never get over it, no matter what justice is served. Peter being put in jail will not bring his sons back and that’s a fact.

Brief history: Andy is one of the grief counselors at the school. He is there when anyone needs to talk about a loved one whom they had lost or just wants to vent about the killer. He wasn’t there when the shooting happened, but he secretly wished he was so that he could have found out first hand instead of on the news.

Brief history: As soon as Logan heard his little sister Jessika had been shot, he dropped everything and rushed to be by her side. However, fate had another plan for her as she died while he was holding his hand. It's been very difficult to cope for him, and he's taken to things he wouldn't normally be doing to help.

Brief history: Olivia is your typical druggie. She uses anything and everything she can get her hands on to deal with reality. She was one of Peter's only friends. Whenever she saw the jocks picking on him in the hall, she would do her best to stick up for him. But after the recent events, she started using more to cope with the loss of her classmates and friends.

Brief history: Cameron was the captain of the basketball team, that is, until he got shot in the leg. Now he's paralyzed from the waist down and will never be allowed to play basketball in his life. He has to now live with a wheelchair and many months of rehab. Not to mention, his best friend was killed during the shooting so now he has to deal with that as well.

Brief history: Alexis and Jason were in the teacher's lounge together when the shooter came in and shot a round of bullets. As soon as Alexis heard the first shot fired, she automatically ducked for cover. But that shot was aimed at her boyfriend, Jason, and he was killed automatically. They were both teacher's aides at Sterling and now that he's dead, she is unable to go back to that school ever again.

Brief history: Lilah had no idea who Peter was until after the 'incident'. She'd been going to school with him for years and still couldn't have pointed him out in a crowd if you asked her. Until now. Peter took the life of her ex-boyfriend as well as the lives of other students that were her friends and peers. Lilah can't understand why, and she can't understand why she's still here. Instead of dealing with what she's feeling, Lilah's decided to ignore it. If she can't feel it, it can't hurt.

Brief history: Brenton only started teaching at Sterling High the year before. He'd never had Peter in one of his classes, but he'd marked some of his work when he was subbing for other teachers. Brenton had to admit to himself that he'd found some of the boys work a little odd, but had dismissed it as typical teenage angst. He does sometimes wonder if there was something else he could have done, but he doesn't blame himself or anyone else for the things they may have thought they missed. There was no way anyone could have seen it coming.

Age: 17
Brief History: Vicki Scott is your typical flawless beauty queen. Every school has them. Sterling had her and of course it was only natural that she would put a new spin on her role but of course parts of it remained the same. Every guy wanted to nail her and most had and every girl hated her or wanted to be her. Vicki ruled the school, loving to order around her little minions who never ever wanted to make her mad in any way shape or form. She got her way there. She liked that power because god knows she wasn't getting it any where else. Not from house at lease. You would think that Vicki never had a problem in her life but you would be wrong. She never had an easy life. Never. Not with her mother splitting on her when she was only five years old to be with the pool boy. After that her father started out on a slippery slope, he couldn't raise her or her older brother alone but he found away. He tried to...at first but as time wore on the effort was just to much. It was hard when everything reminded him of the woman who broke his heart. Vicki looked exactly like her mother when she was younger which was even harder but her mother was the type of woman that never aged. She was always beautiful but Vicki never saw her mother or herself in that light deep down. Vicki was raised by the nannies in the household. That way her father never had to acknowledge her exsistence. She grew up that way, thinking that it was normal but at the same time she saw what other people had that she didn't. It made her jealous and angry at the same time that all these people get to have families..a family..she would trade in everything she has for one of those. Growing up Vicki spent most of her time befriending imaginary friends. In elementry school, the lonely girl met her first real friend who just so happened to be Peter. Yeah, that's right folks..the secret that no one knows is that one time Peter was considered to be Vicki's best friend and possibly the guy she would marry some day and have that perfect family with. They were inseperable all through elementry and all through middle school. Vicki wishes that things could have remained the same..she wished she was still that little girl who didn't give a damn to what anyone thinks. She wishes she could still have that child like innocence in tact but sadly it vanished once she entered high school. She got out of that gawky stage, her body was starting to change and she started to get noticed from the guys. Vicki transformed herself in one day, letting go of that girl that she use to be. Sadly, Peter didn't change. He remained the same and she knew to fit into this world that she desperately wanted to be apart of, she had to let him go which she did. It was hard but she managed. She made new friends, unsure if they were as true of a friend to her as Peter was. As time went on it became easier to let go, she fit nicely into this world that was so unlike the one before and her friendship with Peter was just swept under the rug. They became strangers. It was like the years they spent growing up never existed. They were on two different sides of the world now but she was never able to completely forget him or let him go. She tried to but something inside wouldn't allow her to. As you can imagine she's shocked to discover what happened. She never thought the boy she knew would do something like this. It hurts..it hurts to think he would do something like this and it hurts even more because she believes she's some how responsible. Maybe if she remained in his life and didn't leave..she did the one thing that she promised she would never do to anyone and that was leave. She knew how leaving felt thanks to her mother and she knew that feeling was way to much to bare. Vicki feels a lot of things but she can't discuss them. She can't talk about them because no one's suppose to know who she use to be. She still has this role to play but it's becoming harder and harder with each passing second

Name: Michael Anderson
Age: 20
Brief history: Michael is a fun guy who probably takes absolutely nothing seriously...or he use to. He use to be the life of the party. He use to be the fatest thing on the field as well. Sports were his whole life. His father beat that into his head at such a young age. He could play anything with a ball and a field really well but his favorite sport has always been football. That was his calling. That was his freedom. Michael is your stereotypical jock..or so it appeared but he was never that bad of a guy. He just didn't notice people that didn't fit into his group and on occasion got a big laugh from their misfortune. It wasn't anything to malicious. It was just high school. Michael never really payed attention to Peter. He never gave him the time of day but Michael remembered on occasion that he picked on him. It was just to get out of the people around him. Michael was never really one to stand up for the little guy. There was to much at risk and he just thought..it was high school. Things like that happen all the time. He never imagined what would occur next. He never imagined that someone would do what Peter did. He thought everyone knew that it was just high school and that high school wasn't that big of a deal. Only four years..sometimes more for some but it's not your whole life. Michael's life changed in an instant that day. He was shot. He would never forget the look on Peter's face. It wasn't a look of evil, it was more of a look of desperation and sadness. He just wanted his pain to all go away. Michael didn't see evil staring back at him. He just saw a lost and broken soul staring back at him..the soul that he helped break. That horrible day that is forever etched in his mind, he got something..a bullet that left him paralyzed in one of his legs. The doctors all say that there's a slim chance he can ever play like he use to. To Michael, that's like saying he's good as dead. Without sports, what does Michael have? Nothing. He's angry and bitter about what happened..about what happened to him and to everyone else. He's angry that he didn't leave him alone. He's angry that he can't play. He's angry that he's reduced to being in a god damn wheelchair. He's just angry. Now he just has to find a new way to live his life..at lease he still has his life, that's the only thing that he's thankful for. This incident changed him..you can't go through something like this without it having changed you. He's still dealing with that change..who knows if he'll ever be able to accept it

Name: Radley Sanchez
Age: 40
Brief History: Born and raised in a small, good Catholic home, Radley had every chance to succeed. He was smart, as smart as they come but not really book smart. He was more street smart. He didn't apply himself nearly enough in his studies at school. He hung out with a rowdy crowd, no one believed 'the bad apple' would ever make something out of himself. He was to wild. Everyone around town wondered what went wrong with him. Radley met Lydia, a intoxicating beauty. She was his everything. His first real love. They loved eachother. They planned on running off together, getting out of this god forsaken town. They were eachother's first. That one night forever changed their lives because 3 months later, she realized she was pregnant. Pregnant at such a young age. They were just children, preparing to have a child. A child that nither of them really wanted. They still wanted to live. They had so much to live for, their dreams came to a halt with this news. Six months later came, bringing the two a beautiful little girl that would foever connect them together. They named her Alexia. For Radley it was love at first sight. He never felt anything that strong before. He finally felt like his life had a purpose. He finally felt good about himself. He couldn't believe that he helped create an amazing life. To say that it was hard would be the understatement of the year. It was hard even though they did get support from their families. It was hard dealing with the sleepless nights and finding work but they managed. It got even harder once Lydia could no longer deal with the stress of having a child. She had to get out of it. It was becoming way to much for her to deal with so she left her daughter with her father, knowing that she was in good hands. She never looked back. She left them. She left Radley to take care of a child that he didn't know how to take care of. He resented Lydia for abandoning them. He tried to raise Alexia on his own. It's hard being a single father but he did the best he could. He stayed in her life so that has to count for something, right? Right. He tried his best to protect her but now he felt like he failed her. He felt like he could have done something more. He feels like he didn't do nearly enough because well his little angel was taken away from him tragically. He didn't even know how much he needed her until now. She never needed him..not in the way that he needed her. He is lost without her. The house they once shared is now empty and haunting. He see's her in everywhere, wherever he goes..he can't escape her. He's never been the type of guy that is really stable..he doesn't know how to handle things really well. He self destructs and right now he's doing exactly that. He has taken solace in alchohol..something that he never would have turned to before. He doesn't care about ending his life. He really doesn't. It doesn't sound that bad because at lease then he would be with her. That's all that matters to him. He just wants to be with her. That's all he ever wanted

Age: 18
Brief history: Penelope Houston formally known as Penny is the youngest child and only girl in her family. She is use to getting her way but she isn't selfish, she is far from it. She didn't ask for much. She was just fine with getting what she got. She never asked for much or expected much out of anyone. She is probably one of the sweetest girls you could ever meet. She was often considered naive, way to naive for her own good but she wasn't stupid. She was far from stupid. She just chose to believe in the good in people. She always stood by that fact. Penny was never the popular girl in high school, she was beautiful and didn't even seem to realize it. She was a straight and narrow girl. She lived her life by the rules, doing exactly what is expected of her. On occasion she felt the need to break free but she never followed through with that urge. She had dreams of getting out of this town and making something of herself. She wanted to be a writer that was her dream. She loves to write. She also wanted to become a nurse since she loves helping people. That's her calling. Penny was a friendly girl, she never had that many friends that were girls thought because girls were intimindated by her plus she was also pretty shy but her best friend happened to be her older brother Peter. She looked up to him, growing up. They were inseperable. They were always so close to each other. They were more then siblings, it was like they were best friends. They knew each other better then anyone. She never thought he would ever do something like this. She didn't think it was possible. She is still in deny that he's responsible for this. She wishes she could have done something to prevent this from happening. She believes she could have done something..if only she saw the warning signs first. She feels like there is something missing but she's trying to hold herself together but she finds it more difficult to do with each passing second

Brief History: Mark didn't really know any of the school shootings since he came to this school his senior year after his mother moved from Boston along with his 10 year old sister . He has been in and out of juvenile hall as a minor due to his anger problems which could be stemmed back due to his troubled childhood with his abusive father. Mark did not know the shooter but has had a couple of classes with him. Mark suspected that the kid was a bigger loose cannon then he was. He survived the shooting by hiding in the high school football team's locker room. He regrets not pulling in someone into the locker room with him when the shooting started.

Brief History: Veronica was your typical christian girl. She was raised that since her parents are pastors at one of the churches. She has high morals and is always praying to God about her problems. However when the shooting happened and she saw some of her classmates die in front of her she felt like God wasn't listening anymore especially when one of her friends was killing the shooting. Since the shooting she has totally shut down from everything that has to do with religion. For the first time in her life she feels like God has truly let her down.

Age: Thirty-Nine
Brief history: Lydia Cormier fell badly in love with Radley Sanchez and had his child at a very young age. She really didn't think they'd make it through the first few months, but somehow they did. Their little girl was everything to Radley but she was terrified of her. Lydia was terrified she would hurt her daughter, or worse. When Lydia gave Alexia to Radley and ran off to a bigger city to loose herself, she realized then with the help of a doctor what she had been going through - a verison of postpartem depression. She was down all the time and had horrible thoughts that scared her. With medicine she was able to straighten things out...but...she just couldn't bring herself to go back. She knew they both had to hate her. Everyone had to hate her for tucking tail and running like that. She stayed away but the second she realized that the high school had had a shooting, she jumped up and left her little life behind to make sure Alexia was alright. Little did she know that her daughter was not alright. Not at all.

Brief History: Quentin's long time girlfriend Lucy worked in the Sterling High Library part time three days a week to pay off her student loans. They went to college together and she was a budding med student who had a dream to become a Cardiologist. He knew she was working that day, and he was gonna go into the school to surprise her with a picnic lunch and take her out somewhere special where he was gonna propose to her, when he heard gunshots. He ran in the direction of the library and saw Lucy in the doorway barely breathing. He sat down and held her in his arms, pressing on the wound with his hand to relieve the pressure. He begged her to stay with him a little longer, and she tried to, mumbling 'I love you' before closing her eyes for the last time.

Name: Bruce Quartermaine
Age: 22
Brief History: Bruce has been through so much tragedy in his young life that it is a miracle that he didn't have serious issues like the Sterling High shooter. Tragedy first touched Bruce when he was seven years old when his father who had been a police officer for 9 years was gunned down during a shootout with gang members. Tragedy would strike Bruce's life again when Bruce was 11 years old when his mother who was a non-smoker was diagnosed with lung cancer and sadly she would die a week before Thanksgiving. With both of his parents gone, Bruce was sent to live with his godfather and his family who tried to make Bruce's life as happy as they could. Unforunately the void that was left by the deaths of his parents could never be filled. When Bruce attended Sterling High he was the captain of the high school wrestling team and he used his wrestling matches as a form of releasing his anger over the death of his parents. When Bruce graduated from high school rather then go to college or join the military he enlisted into the police academy following in the footsteps of his father who did the same when he graduated from high school. When he heard about the Sterling High shooting, he found out that several victims are the children of fellow police officers. He relates to the families of the victims because he knows what they are going through when he lost his father.

Name: Shawna Shelton
Age: 19
Brief History: Shawna graduated from Sterling High last year she was in the middle of finishing her first year of college when the shooting had happened. She was the typical popular girl who didn't really socialize with anyone outside of her "inner circle of friends." She was pretty much known for being one of the around the school. However what people didn't know about Shawna was her home life. The truth was despite her high class lifestyle, her father was very abusive to her along with heand 11 year old sister Alexis due to his alcoholism. Due to her father's alcoholism he often spend lots of money by going on a drinking binge and spending days at th time at the local bar. Rather then let anyone in about her problems she put up a wall around herself and false image of being the popular girl without a care in the world. After hearing about the shooting at her old high school she has many regrets. One of those regrets was teasing the shooter which she did then her senior year since he was in one of her classes. Since the shooting, Shawna is trying to be a nicer person and is now opening up about her problems and what she goes through with a counselor. She just doesn't want to keep her pain locked up like that shooter did.
