Melbourne Academy
There is nothing that competes with habit
And it’s neither deep nor tragic

One of the hardest things to deal with is change. Tradition is a custom at Melbourne Academy that is rarely ever challenged. Privileged children born with silver spoons in their mouths attend the best educational institutions that money can buy, and on the East Coast, Melbourne is it. Whether the children of generations of alumni, or children suddenly thrusted into the lap of luxury, many find themselves at the foot of the registration desk so long as their parents can write them a check. Melbourne’s exclusive campus has succeeded in bring wealthy children together for well over a century. The school has been financed by old money and business tycoon’s investing faith in the idea that their children in return will receive the finest of higher education.

When the announcement of a new scholarship program was introduced last year, the media had a field day.

After a furies meeting between Melbourne’s board members, and much talk among the hallways; a verdict was made. Melbourne Academy was slated to open its doors for the first time in its history to underprivileged and middle class students by way of a scholarship program that would offer scholarships in the fields of General Academics, Science, Art, Music, Writing, and Drama. The announcement was met with a mixed reaction among teachers, students, and parents alike; but despite the rising debate and efforts to refute the decision voted on by the board, the school will open it’s doors to scholarship students this coming fall.

How the Other Half Lives

Our Story deals less with the talk and more with the students themselves. Both those harboring the divine right and the backing paycheck to validate their walk down the hallway, and the students who are merely living out the opportune chance of a life time most co-exist with one another – like it or not.

This story is about impending change, the prejudice that comes with that change, and the unlikely alliances formed as a result of that change. This story is about the students of Melbourne Academy, both wealthy and poor alike, and the sudden thrust in which has now forced them together.

The Other Information
The same typical rules found in all of my games apply here. There’s no limit to the amount of characters you play as long as you play an equal amount of boys and girls. Proper grammar and spelling is expected. Profiles without bolded subjects will not be added to the first post. I expect profiles to be in within five days. I’m not setting the amount of characters we accept, therefore it will be very easy to make one group with more characters then the other. This is why I ask everyone to look over the profiles. If it gets to the point where we have more wealthy students then scholarship students or visa versa, I won’t hesitate to ask later entries to change. Thanks.

The Profiles

Taken By: Your FF Name
Name: First and last name. Indicate nicknames with ** or ()
Age: Sixteen – Nineteen
Status: Simply put “Paying Student” or “Scholarship Student”
Theme Song: This is optional.
Personality: A couple of lines. I’ve decided not to specificy, but keep in mind that your character’s personality is going to give other players an idea of who they are. Be creative. Also, this is a private school. Upper class America is not always rainbows and butterflies and if I end up seeing a bunch of rich, understanding kids, I’m going to pull my hair out. The game needs snobby brats. It makes the game interesting. On the contrary, originality is also appreciated, so take your time with this.
Opinion/Scholarship: “Opinion” is for the paying students – that’d be their opinion on the scholarship students. “Scholarship” obviously, is for the scholarship students. Just briefly touch on what kind of scholarship they were awarded (art, drama, writing, etc …)
Crush: Make it one, make it ten, make it a hundred, I don’t care – but give a reason.
PB: Name and Picture.

I'm taking over for Erica, who's tackling some things outside of role playing, which is what has been consuming all her time. But you're in good hands, considering you're in the hands of the creator once more.

A few changes have been made:

A.) I've deleted the brief history section. I think this'll make it easier for you to get your profiles in.
B.) I'm not requiring an even amount of scholarship and paying students. Given that the school is just now opening its doors to scholarship students, there shouldn't be an even amount of the two groups anyway.

With that said, please repost your profiles.

Name: Reed Pennington
Age: Eighteen
Status: Paying Student
Theme Song: Somewhat Damaged - Nine Inch Nails
Personality: In a largely patriarchal family, the emergence of predominately male characteristics within Reed Pennington occured not only without surprise, but as expected. Reed's mother filled her role as the typical Pennington wife: a beautiful, young debutante with a fortune of her own, yet lacking a troubling, assertive personality. She faded into the background, regardless of her glamourous, luxurious lifestyle designed to distinguish the wealthy from the simply middle class. She had little influence in her only son's life, a regrettable, perputating event possibly changed with a simple alteration in environment. But Reed can only be a continuation of a legacy of rich, powerful men with a hidden affinity for vices of all kinds. There are few drugs Reed hasn't tried, and even fewer which he goes without using for very long. Reed has sampled all sorts of women, never growing fond of any specific girl, although his unwavering disinterest often takes a backseat for his pursuit of sexual gratification. He carelessly throws an abundance of money around without making so much as a dent in his fortune, gambling when he can and indulging himself with useless trinkets or frivolous activities. As for Reed's personality, few are unaware of its duality. The 'corrupted' side precipitates most of his actions and affects his guise as a gentleman of upstanding purity and charm. To those who matter, he couldn't be any better. To those who don't, he couldn't be more of a nightmare.
Opinion: The abrupt change in Melbourne's policy certainly ruffles a few of Reed's feathers, but on the whole, he is very optimistic. The scholarship students are a potential, completely new form of entertainment. Of course, he couldn't be more outraged in the company of his family and 'closest' friends.

PB: Jake Gyllenhaal

Taken By: Dimaranwen
Name: Audrey Donaldson
Age: Seventeen
Status: Scholarship Student
Theme Song: Tesko Suicide - Sneaker Pimps
Personality: As one who had sampled and grown fond of the rich and fabulous lifestyle, Audrey habitually remains just a little bit arrogant, despite the squalor she now lives in. Two years after her father's death, Audrey still furiously defends her father's name and short legacy. Gambling addiction or not, Sebastian always seemed to find the time to read Audrey a bedtime story, or take her to the zoo. Yet she competes with biased, published articles and the media's obsession with portraying nearly everyone in a bad light. The struggle has left Audrey desolately jaded, and she would like nothing more than to put her past behind her, yet she finds it impossible with the constant reminders people like to dole out. Audrey's pretentious nature nearly always makes her feel cheated out of the life she had for a precious few years and all the benefits from such a life, including an acceptance letter from Melbourne Academy. Audrey could almost see her name on the books, only to have it carelessly erased after everything went to pieces. The only reason she finds herself able to go there now is for her profiency in writing, but to Audrey, that still isn't enough. She wants to have it all, an unquestionable place at the school included.
Scholarship: Audrey seemed to accept her scholarship for writing begrudgingly and enthusiastically at the same time.

Name: Bowen Everard
Age: Eighteen
Status: Paying Student
Theme Song: Nobody's Girl by Bonnie Raitt
Personality: The poor little rich girl syndrome is a vicious, contagious affliction, and unfortunately for Bowen Everard, it’s been a difficult label to leave behind. A child raised in an age of absenteeism, Bowen was raised in the company of her matriarch grandparents as her parents meandered around the world. Demur from practice, polite by habit, and jaded with time, Bowen’s remarkably observant and equally critical. She has an affinity for meticulously deconstructing every thought, idea, or concept that comes to be entertained in her mind, almost to an obsessive compulsive fault. And contrary to the cliché, she’s not exclusive in her criticisms. Bowen finds it difficult to identify with many of her fellow peers as she abandoned the ways of the reckless teenager years ago for a quieter life in the company of Sylvia Plath and classic Cary Grant movies. An old soul trapped in the body of a Y-generationer, in spite of her reservations against everything, the person Bowen’s most critical of is herself. A perfectionist born and bred, she has an affinity for setting impossible standards for herself to live up to, and because of it, she unintentionally alienates anyone who might threaten to challenge the established and comfortable virtues she lives by.
Opinion: Bowen certainly doesn’t anticipate the animosity and drama the new admittances will bring to the hallways of Melbourne; but if they have skills they’re willing to advance and potentially make the world a better place with, she’d wager to say their places are more deserving than that of those who skate through merely because their parents are willing to write checks for them.

Name: Eve Van Chester
Age: 17
Status: Paying Student
Theme Song: "Evil Angel" - Rufus Wainwright
Personality: At one point in her early childhood, it might have been that Eve could have been brought up as a well-mannered young woman with much humility and respect, but that was then, and unfortunately this is now. Eve is about as respectful as a vulture and as humble as Norma Desmond. She of course makes it a necessity to befriend all of the most popular girls at Melbourne and flirt incessantly with all the guys that she deems worth giving a second glance, but her priorities remain devoted strictly to herself, and she's ever ready to turn against a friend in order to get what she wants. She realizes that a lot of her negativities stem from her deprivations at home, but instead of coming to terms with her parents, her sister, and herself, she uses this as a way to get pity from her peers, and to her delight it seems to work frequently.
Opinion/Scholarship: Her standing opinion about the new students is that they're poor. Eve Van Chester does not associate with poor people. It's going to take the majority approval from the rest of her friends or a really good-looking guy to get on her good side. Oh yeah, and the moment they make an allegiance with Elizabeth, she's dropping them as she would anyone.
Crush: TBA
PB: Rose McGowan

Taken By: Old Wolf
Name: Elizabeth *Eli* Van Chester
Age: 17
Status: Paying Student
Theme Song: "Paper Bag" - Anna Nalick
Personality: Scheming, manipulative, and eager to steal the spotlight of her parents from her sister... these are the things that represent the exact opposite of who Eli is. Always being raised to be polite and courteous for the sake of her parents dinner parties made Eli become naturally polite and courteous to everyone. She has only a handful of friends at Melbourne because, for the most part, she's considered a goody-goody, but she gets the feeling that this stereotype was ignited by Eve. As time passed at Melbourne she grew to hate Eve as much as Eve hates her, and with that hatred she's grown to despise everyone who she sees as snobbish and material, and of course all those in league with her sister.
Opinion/Scholarship: Eli actually looks forward to the new arrival of the scholarship students. She's never actually talked to someone who was of the non-privileged class before, but she's come to the conclusion that there must be more of these people who have learned the same respective values as she has. This is what she is desperately hoping at least. She'd hate to see anymore people succumb to Eve's charms.
Crush: TBA
PB: Christina Ricci

Name: Andrew Forbes
Age: Eighteen
Status: Scholarship Student
Theme Song: Admit It!!! by Say Anything
Personality: Andrew has come to recognize a common disposition shared amongst the people he’s encountered; everything is filtered into black and white spectrums. Donnie Darko touched on the subject with Jim Cunningham’s Truth and Fear line. Suggest there are grey areas, and suddenly you’re dismissed as being young and impressionable. Andrew has an affinity for making interesting first impressions because of his often dogmatic opinions and antagonistic confrontations. The devil’s advocate to the proverbial devil’s advocate, Andrew determined long ago that he wasn’t going to challenge the stereotypes people categorized him under. Instead, when people’s sensitivities write him off as a pretentious asshole, he throws their misgivings back in their faces, often placating the role that was created for him. The small circle of friends Andrew has accumulated through the years are privy to a different side. Andrew’s surprisingly easygoing when he doesn’t feel like he’s being attacked. He looks for substance in his relationships, and would be perfectly satisfied with just two or three really close, loyal friends, as opposed to a circle of acquaintances who measure their popularity based on the number of names and numbers they can get down in their address books.
Scholarship: Andrew’s critical expose on the war in Iraq was featured in a special student edition of Time Magazine publications, which was also included in the portfolio he submitted to Melbourne’s Admissions counsel. Andrew's writing scholarship is directly affiliated with Melbourne’s acclaimed student run newspaper.

Name: Tallulah Donahue
Age: Seventeen
Status: Paying Student
Theme Song: “Rip Her to Shreds” by Blondie
Personality: Like the malicious, Kathryn Merteuil once said in the movie, Cruel Intentions, “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer,” Tallulah Donohue follows this saying close to her heart. She, like Kathryn is the type who loves manipulating people from inside their heads, messing them around until their self-esteem has faded away. Really, what can you expect from Tallulah, who was raised like this. Her mother thought her, “If you first don’t succeed, try a lot harder,” and that is exactly what Tallulah does if she doesn’t get her own way. She completely the opposite of her half sister, Odetta and she likes it that way. Growing up, she particularly didn’t associate herself near her, much to her mother’s encouragement, as she knew her mother hated Odetta, as this is the case, Tallulah has grown to be completely different from her sibling. She’s the type that would talk down to you and bitch about you, not that you wouldn’t know, since Tallulah would basically spread it around the school, even across town. Tallulah might look friendly, but really, you need to watch out for her if you are in her way. I mean, if you are in her way, GET OUT. Having said, Tallulah rarely shows emotions in front of people, she just doesn’t feel the need. People betray her, so she stabs them in the back. It’s really fair, honestly.
Opinion: Lower class is all Tallulah can think. The type who can’t pay for their own schooling. She doesn’t like it all. Just because they have scholarship doesn’t mean she is going to treat them with respect. Tallulah has a huge dislike for these “scholarship” students. They think they can ramble in the school, like they are part of it, not while Tallulah is here. She will stop at nothing to make their time at Melbourne Academy, a living hell and she intends on doing until she leaves the academy.
Crush: TBA
PB: Rachel Bilson

Taken By: PJ_Believer
Name: Odetta Donohue
Age: Eighteen
Status: Paying Student
Theme Song: "Timberwolves At New Jersey" by Taking Back Sunday
Personality: Unlike her younger, half sister, Tallulah, Odetta doesn’t take the pleasure of hurting people behind their backs. She is the nicer one of the sisters and like her mother before her, she takes after her academics. Odetta is soft spoken and hates confrontation. Some people might think she might be like Jamie from the book, A Walk to Remember, the girl who nice and helpful, that doesn’t speak that much. Although, Odetta has these characteristics, she knows she isn’t a minister’s daughter or reads the bible, but helping people is something she enjoys, even if she wasn’t rich. She likes people and tutoring seems rewarding for her. She’s the type of person who likes starting fun raisers for the people, who don’t have what she had growing up. Odetta hates messing with people’s mind just to get what she wants, she knows Tallulah loves that and Odetta hates blaming people, but she blames her stepmother for making Tallulah the way she is today. Although, you might think that Odetta might be depressed growing up, she was always positive of the outcomes. Her father told her regularly about her mother and how gentle and kind she was and Odetta wants to live to the potential of her mother. She misses her, but her life has to go on without her. Odetta is the type of person, who is friendly to everyone and likes joking around with anyone. She doesn’t care if they have money or not, as long as they have a kind heart, but isn’t always the case, so Odetta is nice to them, nevertheless.
Opinion: Odetta can honestly say she thinks its great. Although, she knows it won’t go around the school as well as she wants it to be. Odetta thinks having fresh, new faces around the school are always good and interacting with these people is a good way for her to meet new people. She thinks having scholarship students would provide a more diverse of people in the school.

Name: Eli Sheppard
Age: Nineteen
Status: Scholarship Student
Theme Song: “Orgy” by The Cure
Personality: One word that comes into mind when describing Eli Sheppard is moody. He’s probably the moodiest person, you will ever encounter. Eli blames it on the endless nights of producing lyrics and music of his own, but really it’s because of his family life. You see, Eli came from an abusive family. His father was an alcoholic, blaming Eli that his mother ran out of him because of him. Eli become distant and he prefer the company of himself. He’s not a people person. He just doesn’t like surrounding himself within a group of person. Eli has trust issues. He sorely blames this again on his parents. If his mother didn’t run away, then his father wouldn’t be an alcoholic. Then everything would be normal. Maybe, it’s the world saying that his not perfect, but really who is perfect in this day and age. The celebrities aren’t. The president isn’t. Even the people, who are rich at the Academy aren’t. Everyone has their flaws, including Eli.
Scholarship: Eli was spotted as a Melbourne Academy’s teacher of Arts was passing through his school one day. They wanted to see him audition from his original music, yet, there were other people going for that scholarship from his school. Eventually, Eli got it and now he’s attending Melbourne for his talent for writing and creating music on his own.

Personality: Cassara is a rather private person. She's not a loner or shy. She just likes to keep things to herself. She likes people and enjoys interacting with them but she likes to hear about other people first before she gives up any information about herself. She loves playing the violin and her pet Rottweiler, Bach. People would be surprised to learn about Cassara's real home life because she's always smiling. But her smile is just a mask for the pain and disappointment she has experienced since she was a baby.
Opinion: Cassara feels like it will be a breath of fresh air around the school. She has had to be around people just like her parents for so long that she's sick and tired of it. She's always wanted to know how the other half lived and now she might just have the chance to see it.
