“Dad?” she asks, though her voice is quiet and he can barely hear her. Most of the time, she resembled Elena; outspoken, loud and opinionated, but today there was something different about her, she was shy and only met her father’s eyes when she had to. “What was my Mom like?” She asks, lifting her head up to look at him. Stefan could feel the blood in his veins run cold at the request and Avery took notice of it.

They didn’t talk about her mother. It wasn’t a rule or anything, they just didn’t. She never wanted to know and he never wanted to tell. The woman who her Aunt Bonnie, Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Caroline had always called Elena was nonexistent in her life with her father. He’d only mentioned her mother once in all of her sixteen years, and when he had, she’d looked down, only to look up a few moments later and see him gone.

“She was.. amazing.” He says tentatively, as if he wished she were talking about the newest boy she liked rather than this, which Avery didn’t doubt. “Strong willed, pain in the ass, love of my life.”

Stefan didn’t talk about Elena, not since that night. The memories he had of her were never good and he supposed that Klaus had something to do with that. He had seen the original die, yet the memories he had never came back; he couldn’t remember meeting Elena, couldn’t remember telling her he loved her. Couldn’t remember anything.

Avery bites down on her lower lip and nods slowly, half expecting him to continue, but when he stood up and walked across the room, she lifted her head and watched him, waiting a moment before she spoke again. “How did she die?” She asks and she can see the change in him almost instantly. Stefan looked twenty years older with the mention of her mother’s death.

Avery had heard so many good things about her mother and the trials they’d all gone through. Defeating a tomb of vampires, defeating the doppelganger Katherine and defeating Klaus; the stories her Aunts and Uncles had told her were all happy, never mentioning once the death of her mother, almost as if they were shielding her from the truth of it.

Stefan clears his throat and sighs, not wanting to lie to his daughter but at the same time not wanting to reveal the truth. After a long pause of awkward silence, he crosses his arms over his chest and relives the night, as much as he could remember of it. “The man you’ve been told about…” he trails off, licking his lips. “Klaus.” He adds quietly after a moment, but she’d already figured that out. “You were six months old when he came for her. I tried to stop it, had your Aunt take you into the other room and I killed him…” he trails off again and Avery looks down, diverting her gaze. “But not before he killed her.”

Avery didn’t have to look up to know that her father had left the room, but even as she did, there was a numb feeling in her chest and she bites her lip harder, fighting back tears she didn’t know were there.
