Damon saved Stefan from the torture chamber a couple episodes ago, even though he knew Elena would be mad. I don't think Damon is really doing all of this because of Elena. When he gave his big speech the other week, he never mentioned Elena. The brothers relationship is my favorite on the show, so maybe I overanalyze it a bit, but I think Damon would do anything for his brother, and he is trying to save Stefan right now, he just doesn't actually say it. Damon would rather spend 10 years saying he did something for Elena or Stefan rather than admitting that he's doing something for Stefan because he can't live without his brother. It's like he's 5 and still believes in cooties.
