Much of it starts first and foremost with the chemistry. In order for any pairing to be popular you need to have likable people with a great onscreen relationship — Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan have that. Both guys seem to have fun with each other and have some of the show’s best seasons. Many of their arguments certainly give you an old-married-couple vibe; they’re constantly bickering and we’re constantly wondering if they’re ever going to just snap completely all over each other. Part of their appeal is almost in that they almost seem to enjoy squabbling with each other; it gives them something to do, and it’s a testament to their personalities as a pair of really strong-willed guys. While the arguments are fun, the appeal also comes from how when the chips are down, they’ll do almost anything for each other. Remember, Danny gave up part of an organ in order to help McGarrett out. That moment with the transplant easily deepened their friendship and made them more connected than they’ve ever been in the past. Given everything that they’ve gone through and everything that they’re going to go through we don’t see the McDanno ‘ship dying, because they are BFFs and we love them forever.
