Yeah, S2 just stripped everything away, in every sense. The Sarah storyline was obviously meant to be so much more but got buried.

Yeah, when I look at the old spoilery information and combine it with the info that ABC rejected the Erica/Jack romantic direction that SR wanted to turn the story into, it really does seem as if SR's original intention for the show was to have an Erica/Jack and a Hobbes/Sarah romantic pairing, but when ABC refused to explore his most favourite romantic option (Erica/Jack), he decided to throw the Hobbes/Sarah angle away as well because he was hellbent on sticking Erica with a meaningless human/human romance, so he went for the next best thing (Erica/Hobbes) and tried to fit a square peg into a round hole. What a waste.
