I love how even though he struggles against it a bit, they really do mesh right in as family.

I'm such a sucker for family feelings on TV shows I can't help myself

Exactly and Elena can only be open and honest w/ a few people so it must be nice to have someone like Alaric who will always protect her but isn't too overbearing on her.

I'd say of all his students Jer and Elena are the one's he's taken under his wings the most. They've always come to him even in season 1 and that's not just because of who he was dating and who he was married to in my opinion.
