I'm still confused. I'm not 100% if he said it in the books. I need to read those parts over again. I know one time in the books, he pretended he didn't know Matt's name when he was saving Bonnie.

Love that he went crazy only when he heard Bonnie's name. And that Elena knew that Damon'd go crazy if he saw Bonnie in pain.

Yeah, that's part of why I love it.
Even if Damon can't see that he cares for Bonnie, Elena (and Stefan) obviously can! Plus, it specifically says in the book that NOTHING Elena had said so far had gotten his attention until she said that.

Damon needs to found out his feelings ASAP! I could actually see him acting like this on the show though. Stefan saying he cares about her but Damon deny's it

Yes. Re-reading the part, Elena was actually surprised that hearing Bonnie's name broke Damon's concentration. And then Bonnie's scream made Damon go mental.
