Considering its heyday was decades ago, it's easy to forget that Roseanne absolutely took over the airwaves for nine incredibly successful years. Millions upon millions of people tuned in each week to watch the working-class Conners go about their lives in suburban Illinois. Unlike the majority of sitcoms at the time, Roseanne was unsurprisingly centered around a working mom who wasn't afraid to be brash and tell her husband off whenever she saw fit. Throw in three kids and the financial realities of a two-working-parent household and you've got a massive hit.

And then, the ninth season. The final season of the show sees the Conners win over $100 million in the lottery and, well, things get a bit weird from there. Money changes people, after all. Also, John Goodman's Dan Conner was noticeably less involved than he was in previous seasons as he was filming a little film called The Big Lebowski when this final season was in production. The real kicker about the whole thing is that the series finale reveals the entire ninth season was a story made up by Roseanne Conner. They hadn't won the lottery and Dan succumbed to a heart attack at the end of Season 8.

Bev typically showed up at Roseanne's house for Turkey Day with Nana Marie beside her, and the two tough-to-please women would always cause more chaos than there already was for The Conners.

It’s was funny because it was true. This sitcom about a Midwestern working-class family with constant money struggles, family squabbles, rowdy children and a strong-willed and sarcastic matriarch without a filter hit a nerve with a good portion of America that hadn’t felt represented on TV before.

Roseanne was a riff on Roseanne Barr’s domestic-goddess standup persona. The Conners—which included epic supporting actors Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman—weren’t fancy, classy or subdued, like most other boob-tube clans. They were lazy, loud junk-food addicts who would have scoffed at participation-ribbon helicopter parenting. They dared to broach subject matters rarely touched on in ’90s TV shows, let alone prime-time comedies, including domestic abuse, unemployment, heart attacks and preemies. There was also a fair share of behind-the-scenes drama—not to mention Barr’s public controversies.

The original two-part series finale told viewers that season 9 "was all a dream."
While it could be considered that Roseanne is a sitcom that ended with the wrong episode, it was the two-part finale of season 9 that really cemented the downfall of the show. The entirety of season 9 was revealed to have been a dream, retconning some huge plot details, including that the Conners had never won the lottery, and Dan (John Goodman) hadn't had an affair and rather had died at the end of season 8. Although Roseanne did return for season 10, with over a decade between installments, the final season of the show once again retconned huge details, and Dan mysteriously rose from the dead.
