15 Quintessential Movies That Define Gen-X
Empire Records (1995)
Before music could be conveniently downloaded to your computer, or nowadays streamed on your phone, the local record shop was the place to go to find new music. Taking place in just a one-day time period, Empire Records follows a group of young people working at the titular record store who try to stop the store from being sold to a corporation in just a singular shift.

The way that Millennials feel about the days of picking out a VHS for a Friday movie night is similar to the way Gen-X looks back fondly at the days of eagerly waiting for their favorite artist's new album to hit the store shelves. Empire Records encapsulates the importance of record shops as not only a place to discover new bands but also as a cool place for Gen-X to hang out with their friends. It also touches on the generation's attitude toward capitalism and how they felt about their parents' generation.

10 Movies That Perfectly Encompassed 1990s Aesthetic
Empire Records (1995)
Directed by Allan Moyle in 1995, Empire Records is to the '90s what Brat Pack films were to the '80s. Take a handful of up-and-coming stars (Liv Tyler, Renée Zellweger, Ethan Embry, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney), and cast them as employees at an indie record store in danger of a corporate takeover, and you’ve already accomplished two important things: ensuring that the cast will be wearing the coolest clothes and listening to the hit music of the moment. With fashion hits like Corey’s (Tyler’s) cropped powder blue angora sweater and mini kilt paired with classic Docs, A.J.’s (Whitworth’s) sloppy grunge cardigan, and Debra’s (Tunney’s) self-administered buzz cut, in six months you could drop by any mall in the nation and see teens replicating the looks.

Indie rock was highlighted, and audiences heard Toad the Wet Sprocket, Edwyn Collins, the Gin Blossoms, and the Dire Straits, among many others.

20 90s Films That Prove They Just Don't Make Them Like They Used To
19. Empire Records (1995)
A day in the life of a record store employees might not seem like blockbuster material, but Empire Records captured the hearts of a generation with its portrayal of 90s teen angst set against a backdrop of grunge and pop music. The film manages to be both a time capsule of the 90s music scene and an evergreen tale of teenage rebellion. Empire Records, with its immortal line, "Damn the man. Save the Empire," champions the youthful idealism and quirky individualism that's missing from today's hyper-curated teen movies.

20 Movies That Nailed the ‘90s Grunge Aesthetic
Empire Records (1995)
A quirky and sentimental snapshot of 90s teen culture set in a small record shop, Empire Records charts the lives of the misfit crew of employees as they try to save their beloved store from the clutches of a greedy corporate owner. Rex, the heart and soul of the movie, goes to extreme lengths to keep the store open and gather enough money to buy the enterprise while his colorful coworkers – Gina and Corey and the new hire Deb – take care of their personal lives and issues. The cast is also outstanding, with Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger bringing a newfound charm to the reused coming-of-age tropes. Under the sunny direction of Allan Moyle, the movie teaches hard lessons about adult responsibility and the magic of teamwork and friendship. Overall warm and fuzzy, Empire Records will give you the sweet ‘90s nostalgia you didn’t know you were craving.
