Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs is a (former) marine sniper turned NCIS agent, played by Mark Harmon. He joined NCIS prior to the show in August 1991, but we first meet him in the JAG backdoor pilot episodes 'Ice Queen' and 'Meltdown' which aired in 2003. Over the years we have learned that he has a broken and complicated background, with new pieces being uncovered even now over a decade later. You could also say that he is a man of many names; depending on the character he is talking to he has been referred to as 'Gibbs', 'Boss', 'Probie', 'Leroy', or 'Jethro'. He is the, sometimes enigmatic, leader of the team, who has a tendency to only communicate in grunts. Tony once described him as a 'functioning mute'. When investigating and solving cases Gibbs prefers to use old school methods, tricks, and his gut. He has a set of rules for everything and expects his team to learn and follow these rules.

For several seasons we do not know much about his personal life but over time we have learned that he has been engaged 5 times, married 4 times, divorced 3 times, and prefers red heads. Over the years he has also had a number of girlfriends, both in the past and present, including; Special Agent (later Director) Jenny Shepard, Lt. Col. Hollis Mann, and Dr. Samantha Ryan. One of the biggest secret he has kept from the people closest to him was his first wife Shannon and their daughter Kelly. It was their death which led him to join NCIS. He does this only after avenging their death by killing Pedro Hernandez. Something which still haunts him to this day.

He used to hate psychologists with a passion. If not for being shot in Neverland (12x24), he would have never started the process of emotional healing. During Personal Day (13x02) we saw him taking a day off, to visit his old home in California – the one where he used to live with Shannon & Kelly. It was the first time that we saw him visiting their grave. It was a great milestone of him making peace with his past. Dr. Jon Cyril, the surgeon, who has saved his life, was the first person who became his friend outside of work. He took time off to talk some sense into Gibbs, to convince him that he needed a professional’s help, if he wanted to heal from the shock his body and mind went through.

He was the one who introduced him to Grace, a psychologist with a humor. She keeps helping him by acknowledging his rules, and his unwillingness to have appointments at normal hours. Gibbs has healed a lot emotionally over the years, he has regular appointments with Grace - a psychologist recommended to him back in s13. Still he constantly battles with the guilt of killing Pedro Hernandez and his family, with "allowing" Kate, Jenny, Dorneget and Diane to get killed. He has a tendency to see ghosts whenever he is feeling guilty over a bad event. He either sees Mike, who was like a father to him, or Kelly, his young daughter, or even Diane. He loves his team as his own family, for him they are not just co-workers, but his children as well.

Since he prefers to live by a certain set of rules; he expects the same from everyone under his command. For decades he lived by the most important rule of all: Rule #10: “Never get personally involved in a case.” He used it as a shield whenever something bad or unexpected happened within his professional life. It was his only rule that was destroyed, when evidence was pushed under his nose of the opposite of his rule. According to Ziva & Bishop, every case becomes personal as soon as you start working on them. However, it doesn’t mean the end of objectivity, it simply means that you do your best at solving crime, and make sure that you covered every possible angle during the investigation.

Mark Harmon (born Thomas Mark Harmon) was born September 2 1951 in Burbank, California. He is the only son of Tom Harmon, a former NFL player and WWII veteran, and of Elyse Knox an actress and model. His parents initially met in 1940, but only got married in 1944, after Tom returned from the World War where he served as part of the Army Air Corps. For his service he was awarded both a Silver Star & a Purple Heart. Mark has two older sisters - Kristin and Kelly. Kristin was an actress and artist who married recording artist Ricky Nelson when she was only 17. They had a four children together, and a rocky marriage: during the '80s Mark fought for the custody of his sister's children, but in the end decided to withdraw from court. His other sister - Kelly - was first married to John DeLorean, but later on married Robert L. "Bob" Miller in 1984. They have three children altogether from previous marriages.

Compared to his sisters' life Mark had a fairly straight forward live. He played quarterback at UCLA, got his BA degree in Communication, then was drawn into acting in the '70s. Before he made a career in acting, he used to work as a carpenter. He is married to actress Pam Dawber (known for roles such as Mindy from 'Mork & Mindy'), since 1987. They have two sons: Sean Thomas Harmon, and Ty Christian Harmon. They keep a low profile, rarely appearing on events together or talking about the other at interviews.

His acting career started in 1973, but he only gained recognition after his recurring role in St. Elsewhere between '83 - '86. He played alongside many actors, some of them even appeared in NCIS years later. He originally met Patrick Labyorteaux - JAG's very own Bud - in 1986 during the set of Let's Get Harry. He first worked together with Rocky Carroll and Lauren Holly in the medical drama, Chicago Hope (1994 - 2000). Lastly, he has starred in Freaky Friday along with Jamie Lee Curtis, who years later had a recurring role in the 9th season of NCIS.

Mark and his most well-known character Leroy Jethro Gibbs share a few personality traits: both love their privacy, have a knack when it comes to building something out of wood, and their fathers were in Army Air Corps during WWII. Moreover, Mark is also known for his bravery - a few years ago he saved a guy from a burning car.

My heart broke for Gibbs related to it being Fin's mother that was the one after Ziva and than 17x11 of his running away broke my heart all cause Gibbs couldn't lie to the boy when he asked to stay with Gibbs but glad Fin understood at the end and that he is going to a good family

It is such a shame things between Phin & Gibbs worked out that way but it did seem they could end things on good terms. But it was so nice to see him having that child connection in his life
