Yes traditional they are dark because the often had an eductational character.
When the brothers Grimm started to collect all the fairy tales it was more because of academical interest. Later when their collection became popular for children they started to soften them and made them less darker. I haven't seen OUAT but I assume the only thing that the show still has in common with their origin tales are the names of the characters __________________
