It’s been about a year, and it feels safe to call Happiest Season a Christmas classic. What can you tell us about the experience in making that film, and all the positive feedback since its release?

Clea definitely wanted to make a Christmas classic, so that’s wonderful to hear. I love Clea, and when I read the script I was like, “Oh wow, I can’t believe it’s taken this long to do something this straight down the line but also queer. I’ve been making fun of all of the period lesbian dramas that have been made recently—which I think there should be more of! Some are better than others, and it’s kind of easy to make fun of that trope. Straight cis white people have been allowed to make Christmas movies ad nauseam.

I can’t believe that this one little cute attempt at making something sweet had such impact. It’s just a Christmas movie about two girls who go home and try to make it work with their families. We need more of them: small ones, good ones, ambitious ones and simple ones, all of them, everything in between. I’m so proud to be in that movie.

Stewart plays Abby, who is invited to her girlfriend's (Mackenzie Davis) parents' house for Christmas, and plans to propose to her on Christmas morning. However, she learns her partner hasn't told her parents yet that she's gay.

Stewart delivers a funny yet touching performance as a reluctant lover trying to help her significant other work out her own issues while also wanting to move their relationship to the next level.

The romantic-comedy Happiest Season follows Stewart’s Abby and Mackenzie Davis' Harper who are going to visit the latter’s family for the holidays. Abby intends to propose on this visit, though her plans are dashed when she learns that her longtime girlfriend has not come out to her family. What ensues is a film about fraught family dynamics that also features Stewart giving a great comedic performance which encapsulates a larger emotional tapestry.

Abby's hurt is acutely felt even as it is cloaked in increasingly silly shenanigans, making for a character who becomes fully dimensional even when the rest of the story may not always be. As Abby begins to reevaluate her relationship and her own part in it, Stewart ensures that inner turmoil manifests itself in every facet of her performance. It has many awkward moments that draw laughs because of her comedic timing, though Stewart creates a humor that is balanced with a loving empathy.

4. The Happiest Season
The perfect Christmas rom-com for the 2020s, The Happiest Season follows Harper and Abby, a young couple headed to Harper’s family’s home for Christmas. The only issue is that Harper has not told her family yet that she’s dating women, which leaves Abby in the uncomfortable position of having to lie about herself for the holidays. The cast here is top notch. Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis shine in their lead roles, and the internet had a complete breakdown about how magnetic Aubrey Plaza is as Harper’s ex-girlfriend. Alison Brie, Dan Levy, Mary Holland, Victor Garber, and Mary Steenburgen round out the sparkling cast in this film written and directed by Clea DuVall.

It’s a much-needed and utterly modern take on the holiday romance. And what’s more, it feels believable, which is almost unheard of for a Christmas movie! Don’t waste another second waiting to watch this intelligent, funny, and cheerily sincere film.
