I'm so excited to see what Annie is doing next this season. I can't believe I waited so long to see my fav show again.

When Gretchen Mol was starting out I didn't like her much because she seemed another insubstantial starlet. Then she was named the "next big star" by the aptly named Vanity Fair. It wasn't until she did The Notorious Bettie Page did I start to admire her abilities. Bettie Page is a difficult woman to portray because while she did near pornographic photos her attitudes on nudity was refreshingly progressive yet she was a Christian. A lesser actress would've emphasized one side over the other or delineated a jarringly split person but Gretchen gave the movie an organic performance.
Despite my newfound respect I was still initially skeptical about her playing a cop but was I pleasantly surprised. Cop shows are at its best when its about problem solving and human relations over gun play and explosions. Her Annie definitely stresses the intelligence in police work. Part of my skepticism was because of her innate winsomeness but it takes a certain innocence to make Annie realistic. She could've winked at the audience when Sam was describing a laptop bag. She played it straight when she took his clues and found the knife in the typewriter case. This added so much credibility to her role. |
