After a three-month hiatus, Joshua Jackson returns to Vancouver next week to film the fifth and final season of Fringe.

Asked what he could tease about the plot, the 34-year-old actor told THR: "Just about nothing -- because it’s Fringe. Other than the fact that it takes place in the future now."

Jackson portrays Fringe Team consultant Peter Bishop in the culty Fox sci-fi series, created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The fourth season ended on notes of romance, with Peter and Olivia (Anna Torv) talking babies and settling down, and dread, with the looming threat of a showdown with Observers in efforts to rescue the world-slash-humanity.

"There’s a sort of rabid passion that goes with being a young, teenage, particularly ‘girl fan,’ which I have a little bit of experience with," says Jackson, alluding to his role as Pacey Witter in the '90s teen dramedy Dawson's Creek. "That can be a little bit overwhelming. But the Fringe fans, by and large, are just passionate, which I really enjoy. I appreciate that."

And, speaking of Dawson's Creek, would Jackson perhaps consider reuniting with former co-stars James Van Der Beek, Michelle Williams and the newly single Katie Holmes?

"Well, we killed the show so I don’t think that’s ever going to happen," he says, conceding: "Never say never. If I’m out of work for enough years, absolutely. We’ll be old and gray and nasty by the time (that happens).”

(As for Holmes, who is divorcing Tom Cruise after five years of marriage, Jackson diplomatically declined to weigh in on her split.)

Jackson started hosting rival Pacey-Con from Comic-Con in 2010 as a tribute to his heartthrob character in a mocking display of hubris; on Sunday, the actor and his Fringe castmates will return to the San Diego convention for a panel discussion.

On vacation since April, Jackson says he's has spent his time off embarking on a rafting trip, spending time in New York and tagging along to the Cannes Film Festival with partner Diane Kruger. He joined the actress at Manhattan's MoMa screening of her new French-language film Farewell, My Queen, in which she portrays the doomed Marie Antoinette.
