Cristian grew up in Angel Square, a rough neighborhood in Llanview. His older brother, Antonio, was sent to prison when Cristian was younger, leaving Cristian vulnerable to the influence of local Llanview gangs. Cristian found himself caught in the middle of a war between two gangs and was unsure how to extricate himself. Eventually, with help from newly released Antonio, peace was restored in Angel Square.

Cristian met Jessica Buchanan and the two soon developed feelings for each other. Clint, Jessica's father, and Cristian's mother Carlotta were against the union, believing Cristian and Jessica to be from too different worlds. The two were forced to see each other in secret until their parents approved of the relationship. However, one night Cristian and Jessica came close to losing their virginity and Clint walked in. Furious, he forbid the two from seeing each other. Once again Cristian and Jessica were forced to continue their romance in secret. Eventually Clint allowed Cristian and Jessica to start seeing each other again. Cristian wanted to have sex, but Jessica didn't.

As the two entered college, their different worlds started to catch up to their relationship and a distance grew between them. Vega family friend Roseanne Delgado arrived in town and set her sights on Cristian. As Roseanne and Cristian grew closer, Jessica grew more jealous, only straining her relationship with Cristian. Jessica caught Cristian and Roseanne in an embrace and furious, got drunk and lost her virginity to Will Rappaport. Cristian apologized to Jessica and the two reconciled. Cristian learned Jessica and Will slept together when Jessica revealed she was pregnant. Cristian promised to stand by Jessica and raise the baby as his own. Will wanted to be part of the baby's life, causing strains between Jessica and Cristian. After an argument between Will and Cristian, Jessica ran off and was hit by a car, losing her baby. When she woke up she had no memory of Cristian and drew closer to Will. Upset, Cristian slept with Roseanne. Jessica regained her memory and learned of Cristian's infidelity. This, combined with Will and Roseanne's scheming, broke the two up. A rebounding Cristian asked Roseanne to marry him. Jessica learned of all of Roseanne's schemes to ensnare Cristian and attempted to stop the wedding. She arrived after Roseanne and Cristian wed, but did reveal all of Roseanne's schemes to Cristian. He got an annulment.

Cristian and Jessica grew closer again when he helped her find proof that Will was framed for embezzlement. The three ended up going on the run together, but Cristian and Jessica returned to Llanview early. Jessica and Cristian almost got back together but when she learned that Cristian kept an important letter from Will away from her, Jessica halted any chance of reconciliation. Some time after, Cristian got into an accident (thanks to a car RJ Gannon tampered with) that severely hurt his hand and compromised his ability to paint (Cristian's true passion).

Cristian met Jennifer Rappaport as she came under suspicion for Colin MacIver's murder. Cristian supported Jen and believed in her innocence. Jen was cleared of the crime, and she and Cristian began dating. Jen's mother, Lindsay Rappaport, deemed Cristian an unsuitable mate for her daughter. Lindsay set up hidden cameras in Cristian's apartment and broadcast the footage over the internet, making it appear as if Cristian set up this voyeur website himself. Jen was hurt at first, but Cristian explained his innocence and the two reunited.

Cristian began working undercover for the police to bring RJ down. Lindsay learned about this and told RJ. Furious, RJ sent a hitman after Cristian, but the thug ended up targeting Jen. In order to protect Jen, Cristian broke up with her but was forced to keep his reasoning secret. A hurt Jen slept with Al Holden. Eventually the truth about the hitman came out, he was caught and Cristian and Jen reunited.

Jen had a pregnancy scare, which Lindsay used to her advantage by manipulating the tests to ensure the baby read as Al's and not Cristian's. This led to an altercation between Cristian and Al which resulted in Al being paralyzed. Jen was guilt ridden for her role in Al's condition. Motivated by this, she broke up with Cristian and started dating Al. Cristian met Natalie Buchanan, Jessica's sister, and began a close friendship with her. Al, who was faking paralysis, pressured Jen into marriage. Cristian discovered Al's lie and told Jen before she could marry Al.

Jen realized Cristian had developed feelings for Natalie. In an attempt to hang onto Cristian, Jen blackmailed and seduced Al into sleeping with her so she could get pregnant. A pregnant Jen then told Cristian he was the father. Feeling obligated, Cristian agreed to marry Jen. Jen eventually miscarried and things fizzled with Cristian. However, Natalie, in love with Cristian, took his potential union with Jen as a sign that there was no future, so she married Mitch Laurence.

Cristian told Natalie all about Jen's lies and pledged his love for her. Mitch refused to grant Natalie a divorce and threatened to kill Cristian unless Natalie slept with him. Cristian saved Natalie from almost being raped, and eventually the danger posed by Mitch subsided. Eventually, Cristian and Natalie were married.


Natalie, a billiards savant, got the attention of John McBain. John was an undercover FBI agent claiming to be a pool scout looking for people for a Vegas tournament. Cristian and John immediately clashed. When Flynn Laurence, the person John was trying to bust, got wind of John's investigation he kidnapped Natalie. Natalie was eventually rescued but Cristian went after Flynn and was presumed dead.

Cristian did not die, but was kidnapped by Carlo Hesser. Carlo brainwashed Cristian into forgetting his past. Telling the amnesiac Cristian that he was really "John Doe," Carlo further brainwashed Cristian, ordering him to return to Llanview and kill Antonio and his cousin Tico Santi. Natalie and the rest of Llanview were shocked when Cristian returned to town. Cristian kept his amnesia hidden, but John began to suspect that Cristian may not be Cristian at all. Cristian killed Tico and attempted to kill Antonio, but his unexplainable love for Antonio and Natalie prevented him from doing it. Cristian confessed that he was not Cristian at all, but rather a "John Doe" that had been brainwashed into pretending to be Cristian. Cristian was sent to jail, just as John got DNA test results which proved that Cristian really was Cristian. Cristian's memories came back, but he decided to keep his existence a secret from Natalie, not wanting her to feel bound to a man that would be in prison forever. Cristian swore John to secrecy and John agreed.

In prison, Cristian longed for Natalie. Carlo became a fellow prisoner and Cristian began to suspect that he was the person responsible for his brainwashing. Seeing a possibility to get hard evidence via Carlo, and thus allowing him to be cleared of any crimes and be with Natalie, Cristian hired Evangeline Williamson as his lawyer. John learned Evangeline was working to get Cristian out of prison and agreed to help her, acknowledging that he'd have to tell his now girlfriend Natalie the truth. Soon after, John and Cristian were caught in a prison riot engineered by Carlo. The two worked together to survive and gained evidence to clear Cristian. Natalie discovered the truth that Cristian was really alive and lied to her, as well as that John knew the truth the entire time. Furious, Natalie told Cristian and John she never wanted to see either of them again. Cristian was released from prison and returned to Llanview, determined to win Natalie back.

Settling back into civilian life proved difficult, as Cristian's ex-con record prevented him from getting a job. Interest in his art declined, so he began boxing as a means to earn money and help win back Natalie. Natalie was against Cristian's boxing, and led to many fights between the two. Eventually they realized they did not have a future together and amicably divorced. Cristian began to develop romantic feelings as he supported Evangeline during her blindness.
