Let me just say I went to the conferences as a meetings manager and a presenter for the Queer Sexualities conference where I was giving a paper on why Naomily is a queer storyline. When delegates on the Renaissance panel failed to attend, I stayed up the night before to write a paper so there would be a full panel. What I ended up arguing is that the kiss that comes out of the Twelfth Night rehearsal draws attention to the fact that the Renaissance imagination accepted a level of female intimacy that we don't understand in modern times because they separated romantic love from sexual love. Romantic friendships could take the form of kissing, touching and poetic expressions of love without people assuming the women were having sex. Because sexologists like Freud and Havelock Ellis specifically identified romantic friendships and schoolgirl crushes as latent lesbianism their work left a legacy of artificial constraints on the way women experience and express their love for each other and I find that damaging. We don't know what Mini's sexuality is, but the fact that she's prepared to 'go there' with Franky without being identified as a lesbian returns to an older and more liberated notion of female sexuality. That is it in a nutshell. It's still something I'm playing with-- but I think it's pretty decent for only having a night to work on.
