January Book of the Month: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

Quote:
What begins as a simple game if hide-and-seek quickly turns into the adventure of a lifetime when Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy walk through the wardrobe and into the land of Narnia. There they find a cold, snow-covered land frozen into eternal winter by the evil White Witch. All who challenge her rule are turned into stone. Narnia, once filled with all manner of Talking Beasts, Dwarfs, Giants, and Fauns is now a dark, joyless wasteland.

The children can only hope that Aslan, the Great Lion, will return to Narnia and restore beauty and peace to the land. But will the power of Aslan be enough to conquer the dark magic of the White Witch?

I am currently reading the book that comes before this one. I might finish it this month, but who knows. I have enjoyed, but was surprised at how childish it was instead of a more Lord of the Ring-ish type book.

I'm debating whether to read Magician's Nephew before starting LWW. I've never read it in chronological order before. Just publication order.

I read it in the fifth grade and had no idea there even was a series until much later I think it stood-alone

^ You're not the only one.

Love this book. One of my favorites from my childhood.

OMG Nikki, I haven't seen you on in ages! It's Ken. I doubt you'd even remember me. It was like, eons ago!

Hi Ken, yes I remember you. I took some time away from FF for family reasons and I'm just now getting on a little bit.

A link?

I just finished the book. I haven't read it since I was a child so it was nice to go back and read it again. I had forgotten how many details the movie had added which I appreciated since as a children's book it does not go into description as much and is a rather quick read.

I think the book is great and I remember why I loved the series so much as a child. I'm always one for a good fairy tale. I especially like the characters of Mr.Tumnus, the Professor, and Lucy. On the other hand, I don't think we got to know the characters of Susan and Peter that well. I think they focused a lot more on Lucy and Edmund. I know in the next book we get to know them more but I wish they had fleshed their characters out more.

I will also admit that the feminist in me prickled a bit about how Susan and Lucy couldn't fight because wars were messy when women are involved. I also think the religious aspects of the book were very strong, but it was fitting for the time. I also think that adding Santa in there was a little odd. Overall I think it's a wonderful children's book and was happy to be reading it again. I wish I had more time so that I could work through the rest of the series because I remember enjoying those books as well.

I think I'm going to start tonight.

I never read the series as a child. Or I don't remember reading it. I do remember reading The Silver Chair book though.

Originally when I first saw the movie, I thought that too. But after re reading they mention several times that it's always winter but never Christmas. It doesn't seem that odd. But I do like how they use Father Christmas.

Kind of makes me want to actually read all of the books.

Apparently this is the only Narnia thread on the board, I found that surprising.

Anyway, I watched the first film today which I hadn't seen before. Considering I read the book back in the fifth grade I really don't know how loyal it was. I do think it was better than I was expecting, but I did find it underwhelming. Also the score was terrible.

What did you guys think? About the book or film?
