As the Fan Fiction board is closing due to lack of traffic, the rules pertaining to fan fiction and posting it on individual boards has changed:

Fan Fiction:
• You can directly post fan fiction and open threads to discuss fan fiction.
• You can link to Fan Fiction websites, but you can’t link to other Fan Fiction message boards.

Please, when posting a link to a fic, include the following: Specify what couple(s) the fic is about or what characters, give a short summary and a rating.

Or we'll hunt you down and kill you. Well, not really ... but we'll be really mad.

This helps keep non-Zennies (they do to exist!) from reading Zen links and non-slashers from reading gay porn. Also the summaries help to recall what the plot was about -- because once you hit chapter 12, things get fuzzy. And if you write a good summary, you might even lure in some curious readers.

Trends in That '70s Show Fan Fic

These are elements that have either become cliché -- or a quasi-official part of the fanon. Embrace them or avoid them. It's up to you.

• Hyde calls Jackie "Jacks" as a nickname. Hyde never called Jackie this on the show.
• Jackie and Hyde name their kids after Red and Kitty.
• Hyde's main interest in Jackie is sex.
• Jackie is in mortal danger and must be rescued by Hyde.
• Jackie gets pregnant with Hyde's baby, leaves town, returns x-amount of years later.

• Hyde's secret box. Usually contains Jackie mementos, childhood pictures, and whatever else Hyde's felt important enough to stash away.
• Hyde calls Kitty "Mom".
• Hyde is total dillhole who must be punished. Backlash against his out-of-character behavior in season 8.

• Jackie gives birth to twins.
• Jackie's "mismatched eyes". Described countless times over, thanks to Mila Kunis's different colored eyes. But Jackie, in fact, has brown eyes according to episode 215 ("Burning Down the House").

• Donna has hurt Eric too much, and Hyde has hurt Jackie too much -- so that makes Eric and Jackie soulmates.

• Donna is a super-bitch.
• Eric gets beat-up or acts like a coward.
• Eric dies, and Donna must cope with his loss.
• Donna dies, and Eric must cope with her loss.
• Eric and Donna name their kids "Luke" and/or "Leia".

• Fez is a selfish villain, keeping Jackie and Hyde apart.
• Fez and Kelso realize their romantic love for each other.

• Red's only character trait is grouchiness.
• Red dies of a heart attack, of cancer, or some disease.
• Kitty dies of cancer or some disease.



Some Helpful Fan Fic Writing Tips

• It's "Forman," not "Foreman" (despite the misspelled "Foreman & Son" calendar in season 7).

• It's "Jackie Burkhart," not "Jackie Burkhardt".

• Fan fic readers bring with them the history of the show. No need to rehash the characters' backstories (i.e. exposition). Readers already know Eric and Donna's history, Jackie and Hyde's history, etc. Just tell the present story. If the past is relevant to the story, mention it minimally in the narrative (no long, rehashing paragraphs) or have the character refer to it naturally in dialogue.

• Avoid redundancy. If a character has expressed something in dialogue, don't have the narrative then repeat it. E.g., "Why are you always leaving me, Steven?" Jackie said. She was upset Steven was always leaving her.

• Where possible, let the character's actions and words speak for themselves. Trust the reader to interpret the meaning.

• No more than 8 sentences to a paragraph is a nice rule to follow.

But it's working out for all of you -- and for me since I'm really enjoying this story. It's now seven chapters. I had to split chapter five in two.

So, the next chapter for Afterword probably won't be posted until the end of January now since I'm swamped with work and funeral stuff. *sighs* But the chapter is half-written (yay), so here's a short excerpt:

“Hello?” “Hey, Forman.” “Hyde! Hey, man, how’s it going?” “Fine, just reporting in like your mom asked. Where is she?” “Uh, her and Red are having their, uhm... alone time.” Hyde could hear Forman audibly shudder on the other end of the line and he bit back a burn. “Or else she would have ripped the phone out of my hand by now.” “Well, when they’re done—” Hyde couldn’t help but snigger at Forman’s whine of discomfort “—let ’em know that me and Jackie made it to Washington State in one piece.” “Where are you, exactly?” “Hotel in Spokane.” There was a brief pause on the other end of the line and Hyde briefly wondered if they had been cut off, but then Forman’s voice crackled through. Hesitant. “So how’s Jackie doing anyway? Is she a skiing vegan hippie now, or whatever those crazy West Coasters are into?” “She’s fine, I guess. Amnesia or not, I don’t think we’ll ever have to worry about Jackie becoming a hippie.” “True, true. She doesn’t have the lack of hygiene for it, or the tolerance for other people.” Forman chuckled at his own lame joke and then paused, his tone serious. “So... does she have any of her memories back?” “That would be a no—or she’s playing it really close to the chest.”
