Great analysis Lisa! You are spot on with everything you said.

Thanks, Colleen! I wanted to figure out the specifics of how J/H are like K/R and how they're different.

I think Eric and Donna could be like Kitty and Red, too, but not in their dynamic -- in their characters. Donna is more like Red. Anger is easier for her to express than sadness, and she has a temper. Eric is the gentler, more nurturing one. But Donna is very supportive of Eric, too.

Huh. Does that mean Eric fell in love with his father?

I like that description of J/H vs. R/K.

@ Eric falling in love with his father! But yeah, Donna is more like Red than Kitty, so that's kinda true!

Eric would be scared to know he might have fallen in love with his father....

Donna would have to talk him down from the ledge. Then again, maybe Donna wouldn't be the right person 'cause she'd say, "If you don't want a foot in the ass, you'll get down here right now!"

Eric: Not helping, Donna! Not helping at all!

Oh it would be awesome (scary for Eric) if Donna dropped a 'foot in ass' comment during the time Eric is fretting that he fell in love with his father!

I am seeing this scene play out in my head. I can hear Eric screaming in my head.

Eric would end up hiding from Donna for a while. He might also have a fantasy of Donna with Red's face.

That would make a great dream sequence!

Jackie's the only one who can get Hyde to do things he wouldn't otherwise do. Same thing with Kitty and Red. Red doesn't express his feelings in public, but he does to Kitty. Same with Hyde and Jackie -- at least, eventually. See "Magic Bus" for a moment like that.

Hyde and Red both keep their feelings close to the vest, but Hyde's emotions surface much more easily than Red's. In general, he's more sensitive than Red is. He accepts and respects Eric for the kind of man he is and has a close bond with him, whereas Red doesn't understand Eric all too well. Red's a very hard worker, and Hyde tries to get away with as much not-working as possible at his jobs.

Kitty is generally super-compassionate, and Jackie mostly reserves her compassion for Hyde (and herself ). Jackie is generally super judgmental, and Kitty reserves her judgmentalness for special occasions. Kitty is a helper and often gives to others at the detriment of herself. Jackie is a taker and often wants others to give to her at the detriment of themselves. Kitty's passion is being a mother and a nurse. Jackie's passion is being rich and famous.

So on a character level, Jackie and Kitty have some similarities, but, imo, their biggest similarity is the effect they have on their men -- and the dynamic between them and their men.
Great analysis

Thank you.

Y'know, I would've liked to see Eric's newfound respect for Kitty from "Career Day" carried over to other episodes. He realized just how strong his mother is, and it would've been nice to get that threaded into his character.

I would have liked to see that too. Career day is one of my favorite episodes, for so many reasons, but Kitty and Eric's interaction is one of them.

"Career Day" is a great episode all around. I wish we'd gotten more episodes like it, shedding light on the characters' lives, etc.

Kitty really is a great nurse.

You know what could've been interesting/funny (she asks rhetorically)? If each character had to spend a week with another character's family. So Hyde got to spend the week with Fez's host parents. Donna spent the week with the Burkharts. Jackie spent the week at the Formans. Eric spent the week at the Kelsos'. Kelso spent the week with Edna (). Fez spent the week with the Pinciottis.

Guh. This would make a good fanfic.

That would be interesting and possibly a recipe for disaster!

Ooh, interesting!

It could have started with everyone complaining about their families: Eric about Red, Hyde about Edna, Kelso about all his siblings, Fez about his bible-thumping host parents, Donna about her weird parents, Jackie about her floozy mother.

Then Kitty might overhear and say something like if you spend some time in someone else's shoes, you might realize how good you have it.
