It didn't want you to see Elena being mean! Elena was basically saying that Damon always messes up. She thought that if he did that again then she wouldn't have to sort out her feelings for herself. Damon would have made her choice obvious by ruling himself out. But Damon said that he wasn't going to mess up this time, so Elena would have to figure it out for herself who she loves.
