I personally don't think that she always saw Dylan as Brenda's boyfriend.

After Brenda gets locked up, Kelly directly tells her "He's not your boyfriend anymore."

I was never really a fan of the Brenda/Kelly friendship, but even I found that moment -- and the tension between them during that whole episode -- a little disturbing.

And while I was certainly never a D/K fan, I think that Kelly saw her bond with Dylan as more than just a sexual thing.

I'm still going with retcon, mistake, or (shudders) something that actually happened -- though I don't know why they wouldn't mention it sooner.

Yeah, but that's something she had to say to herself also, I believe, because she was deeply insecure in that relationship As she said, "You call and he runs." I think she was never able to get over the fact that she got involved with Dylan while he was with Brenda, and that Dylan definitely preferred Brenda over her since her met her, until the summer of 1992.
