I think it added the much-needed character growth for Dylan that kind of got ruined temporarily when the messy triangle with Brandon/Kelly happened late S5.

All the characters needed an exit from that triangle, I would say.

Yes, I think it was a great mature relationship that Dylan needed in that moment. Toni was great to get him back from all he went through the season before.

I always thought it was funny that Brandon and Dylan took all lengths to avoid Kelly in the episode after she chose herself, but then they buddy up on the coach ride home

I thought it was nice that their love for Kelly didn't ruin their friendship the way that the season three triangle ruined Kelly and Brenda.

I think it was actually ruined more. It's not like they had problems just in a couple of episodes at the end of S5, or that it started after they saved her from the cult. They had problems throughout a whole S5, since Dylan found out Kelly and B Brandon were together. Brenda and Kelly never had problems for a whole season.

Also, we saw just a short period of Brandon and Dylan getting along after Kelly's non-choice. It was that bus ride, then at the beginning of S6 there was still tension because of la Taylor, then with Toni and wedding it was ok again, but Dylan left soon. And for all that we know, they were mainly in touch via Brenda afterwards. I don't know, I would need to see longer period to conclude that their friendship was less damaged.
